Book Synopsis Sustainable Agriculture in Central America by : Jan P. de Groot
Download or read book Sustainable Agriculture in Central America written by Jan P. de Groot and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-07-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural development in Central America is based on extensive growth, supported by macroeconomic policies that marginalize small peasants. Deforestation, erosion and resource depletion are particularly severe. This book offers a comprehensive review of the perspectives for state policies and local action to enhance sustainable agriculture. Macroeconomic conditions and institutional arrangements for the establishment of sustainable production systems in different eco-regional settings (hillsides, humid tropics, frontier areas) are discussed, as well as policy instruments to improve property rights, management rules and financial mechanisms to enhance sustainable resource use.
Book Synopsis Empowering Women by : Carmen Diana Deere
Download or read book Empowering Women written by Carmen Diana Deere and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2001-01-15 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion of married women's property rights was a main achievement of the first wave of feminism in Latin America. As Carmen Diana Deeere and Magdalena Leon reveal, however, the disjuncture between rights and actual ownership remains vast. This is particularly true in rural areas, where the distribution of land between men and women is highly unequal. In their pioneering, twelve-country comparative study, the authors argue that property ownership is directly related to womenÆs bargaining power within the household and community, point out changes resulting from recent gender-progressive legislation, and identify additional areas for future reform, including inheritance rights of wives.

Book Synopsis Scarcity and Survival in Central America by : William Durham
Download or read book Scarcity and Survival in Central America written by William Durham and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1979-06-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at both population and land tenure dynamics in their historical context, this study challenges the view that the 1969 conflict between El Salvador and Honduras was primarily a response to population pressure. The author demonstrates that land scarcity, a principal cause of the war, was largely a product of the concentration of landholdings. The analysis focuses on the emigration of 300,000 Salvadoreans to Honduras in the years before the war, inquiring into the reasons for the emigration, its impact on local agricultural economies, and its relation to the conflict. Answers to these questions are based on a new interpretation of national statistics and on original survey research in peasant communities. The author has used an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on the perspectives of anthropology, ecology, history, demography, and geography. In addition to its value as a case study in human ecology, this book gives a clear account of the nature and origins of ecological pressures in rural Central America. The book is illustrated with 21 photographs and 7 maps.
