Book Synopsis The Contemporary Francophone African Intellectual by : Natalie Edwards
Download or read book The Contemporary Francophone African Intellectual written by Natalie Edwards and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Contemporary Francophone African Intellectual examines the issues with which the contemporary African intellectual engages, the fields s/he occupies, her/his residence and perspective, and her/his relations with the State and the people. In an increasingly economically deprived Africa, in which some states are ruled by dictators, what chances do people have of becoming intellectuals, using their critical faculties to challenge hegemony, enacting the transformative power of ideas in a public forum? Do intellectuals who remain in Africa run the risk of being swallowed into a vortex of hagiography? What is the responsibility of the intellectual in the face of an event such as the Rwandan genocide? What influence does religion have upon the contemporary intellectual’s work? Is migration one of the only paths available for African intellectuals, a number of whom have been critiquing their continent from within Europe? This volume focuses on the intellectual’s engagement across literature, philosophy, journalism and cultural criticism. It contains studies of established writers and philosophers as well as new voices. An African writer and public intellectual describes her own experience in and out of Africa in one chapter; a Philosophy Professor discusses his intellectual trajectory in another. Overall, this timely volume, which includes analysis of the work of intellectuals from North, East, West and Central Africa, problematizes our current understandings of the intellectual legacy of Africa and opens up new avenues into this understudied area.
Book Synopsis Jean Géomètre by : Emilie van Opstall
Download or read book Jean Géomètre written by Emilie van Opstall and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Geometres (10th century) is a key figure in the history of Byzantine poetry. His poems were first published in 1841 by J.A. Cramer, whose edition is based on a single manuscript and contains a large number of inaccuracies. Nonetheless, all the subsequent editors of John Geometres' poems have used this edition without consulting the manuscript(s) themselves. This book presents a new edition of his poems in hexameters and elegiacs, with critical apparatus, commentary and translation. It is a reference book not only for scholars of Byzantine literature, but also for historians and art historians of the Middle Byzantine period, enabling them to arrive at a better formed judgement of the poet and the cultural history of his time. à la mémoire de mon père, Scato, et à ma mère, Marijke

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Literature, Pedagogy, and Curriculum in Secondary Education by : M. Martin Guiney
Download or read book Literature, Pedagogy, and Curriculum in Secondary Education written by M. Martin Guiney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for the importance of literature studies using the historical debate between the disinterested disciplines (“art for art’s sake”) and utilitarian or productive disciplines. Forgoing the traditional argument that literature is a unique spiritual resource, as well as the utilitarian thought that literary pedagogy promotes skills that are relevant to a post-industrial economy, Guiney suggests that literary pedagogy must enable mutual access between the classroom and the outside world. It must recognize the need for every human being to become a conscious producer of culture rather than a consumer, through an active process of literary reading and writing. Using the history of French curricular reforms as a case study for his analysis, Guiney provides a contextualized redefinition of literature’s social value.
Book Synopsis Postcolonial Literature and the Impact of Literacy by : Neil ten Kortenaar
Download or read book Postcolonial Literature and the Impact of Literacy written by Neil ten Kortenaar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining images of literacy in African and West Indian novels, Neil ten Kortenaar looks at how postcolonial authors have thought about the act of writing itself. Writing arrived in many parts of Africa as part of colonization in the twentieth century, and with it a whole world of book-learning and paper-pushing; of school and bureaucracy; newspapers, textbooks and letters; candles, hurricane lamps and electricity; pens, paper, typewriters and printed type; and orthography developed for formerly oral languages. Writing only penetrated many layers of West Indian society in the same era. The range of writers is wide, and includes Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and V. S. Naipaul. The chapters rely on close reading of canonical novels, but discuss general themes and trends in African and Caribbean literature. Ten Kortenaar's sensitive and penetrating treatment of these themes makes this an important contribution to the growing field of postcolonial literary studies.
