L'auteur donne à ses trois volumes le titre général d'Expérience Chrétienne, avec une signification bien particulière : de même que la science de l'univers matériel débute par l'empirisme, et qu'elle théorise ensuite en se basant sur les faits, Frommel prétend construire sa dogmatique en partant d'un fait psychologique commun à tous les êtres humains : le sentiment d'obligation, le sens moral (ce que Kant appelait l'impératif catégorique). L'histoire de l'Église et l'Écriture interviennent ensuite pour confirmer, éclairer et transcender cette expérience première du sentiment d'obligation. Frommel était parti de la même fondation pour articuler son apologétique intitulée : La Vérité Humaine (Je suis homme parce que je dois). Cette approche originale de la dogmatique, qui développe les intuitions de Vinet et de Malan fils, offre surtout l'avantage d'éclairer le lien entre la conscience naturelle de l'homme, et la conscience chrétienne ; lien qui n'existe pas dans les dogmatiques réformées classiques.

Book excerpt: In Socialism of Fools, Michele Battini focuses on the critical moment during the Enlightenment in which anti-Jewish stereotypes morphed into a sophisticated, modern social anti-Semitism. He recovers the potent anti-Jewish, anticapitalist propaganda that cemented the idea of a Jewish conspiracy in the European mind and connects it to the atrocities that characterized the Jewish experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning in the eighteenth century, counter-Enlightenment intellectuals and intransigent Catholic writers singled out Jews for conspiring to exploit self-sustaining markets and the liberal state. These ideas spread among socialist and labor movements in the nineteenth century and intensified during the Long Depression of the 1870s. Anti-Jewish anticapitalism then migrated to the Habsburg Empire with the Christian Social Party; to Germany with the Anti-Semitic Leagues; to France with the nationalist movements; and to Italy, where Revolutionary Syndicalists made anti-Jewish anticapitalism the basis of an alliance with the nationalists. Exemplified best in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous document that "leaked" Jewish plans to conquer the world, the Jewish-conspiracy myth inverts reality and creates a perverse relationship to historical and judicial truth. Isolating the intellectual roots of this phenomenon and its contemporary resonances, Battini shows us why, so many decades after the Holocaust, Jewish people continue to be a powerful political target.

Significant contemporary writing in philosophy appeals to the concept of ’transcendence’ to explore what is deepest in our moral experience, but leaves this notion theologically unspecified. This book reflects on the appeal to transcendence in ethics with reference to the Resurrection of Jesus. Bachelard argues that the Resurrection reveals that the ultimate reality in which human life is held is gracious, forgiving and reconciling, a Goodness that is ’for us’. Faith in this testimony transforms the possibilities of moral life, both conceptually and in practice. It invites our participation in a goodness experienced non-dualistically as grace, and so profoundly affects the formation of the moral self, the practice of moral judgement and the shape of moral concepts. From this perspective, contemporary philosophical discussion about 'transcendence' in moral thought is cast in a new light, and debates about the continuity between theological and secular ethics gain a thoroughly new dimension.
