Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates how George Tyrrell‘s theological challenge to those who would take the church out of history was never effectively refuted, either at the time or since, and that the issues Tyrrell raised are still relevant and alive in the church today. In highlighting Tyrrell‘s liberation of theology from dogmatism, the current work describes why he was vilified by the Roman hierarchy, expelled from the Jesuits, and eventually excommunicated. Tyrrell‘s Ignatian-inspired, hope-filled theology should not be forgotten, not least because it sheds further light on another courageous and prophetic Jesuit, Pope Francis. In revisiting Tyrrell‘s Ignatian theology, this book celebrates the promise that Vatican II presents to the future church, namely, a universal call to holiness as embraced by Pope Francis.

Book excerpt: This book compares the texts of the Traditional rites and the Novus Ordo rites for the seven sacraments, so we can offer substantial reasons for choosing one rite over the other. The plan of the book is simple. For each sacrament, we describe patterns of changes in the texts; then, we lay the texts side by side with comments so you can see particular changes and see the patterns. Finally, we end the comparison of each sacrament by offering some conclusions. Throughout this book, we use the term Traditional to distinguish the Roman Catholic rites before 1962. The authors of the rites promulgated after 1968 use the term Novus Ordo, translated New Order, to describe their new rites. An objective comparison of the texts clearly shows the differences. As St. Thomas Aquinas observed, "What is objectively real is objectively true." The differences in the two rites are objectively real.
Download or read book The Nicene Creed written by Jared Ortiz and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the Nicene Creed is regularly recited in weekly church services, few understand its historical origins and connections to Scripture and key Christian doctrines. This volume bridges the gap, providing an accessible introduction that explains how the Creed is anchored in the Bible and how it came to be written and confessed in the early history of the church. The authors show how the Creed reflects the purpose of God in salvation, especially in relation to Christians' divine adoption as sons and daughters, leading to glorification. Each chapter includes sidebars highlighting how the Creed has been received in the church's liturgy. Professors, students, clergy, and religious educators will benefit from this illuminating and edifying guide to the Nicene Creed.

Book Synopsis The Collected Works of Edward Schillebeeckx Volume 2 by : Edward Schillebeeckx
Download or read book The Collected Works of Edward Schillebeeckx Volume 2 written by Edward Schillebeeckx and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In effect Revelation and Theology is Schillebeeckx's general introduction to theology. Its fifteen chapters were originally published separately between 1954 and 1962, but the thematic collection offers a vivid picture of the theological renewal in the wake of World War II. Schillebeeckx's erudition and broad scholarly orientation are clearly demonstrated in this volume. Throughout there are pointers to the (at that time new) ecumenical approach to Scripture and tradition. The problem concerning the function of the scholastic tradition is highlighted. Although Schillebeeckx draws extensively on Thomas Aquinas's thinking, this early work already shows that he is not a (neo)Thomist in the narrow sense of the word. Unlike the single Dutch volume, the English version was published in two volumes. In the Collected works of Edward Schillebeeckx, however, here they are published together in the sequence that the author envisaged.

Book Synopsis The Eucharistic Form of God by : Jonathan Martin Ciraulo
Download or read book The Eucharistic Form of God written by Jonathan Martin Ciraulo and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theology of the Eucharist and shows its significance for contemporary sacramental theology. Anyone who seeks to offer a systematic account of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theology of the Eucharist and the liturgy is confronted with at least two obstacles. First, his reflections on the Eucharist are scattered throughout an immense and complex corpus of writings. Second, the most distinctive feature of his theology of the Eucharist is the inseparability of his sacramental theology from his speculative account of the central mysteries of the Christian faith. In The Eucharistic Form of God, the first book-length study to explore Balthasar’s eucharistic theology in English, Jonathan Martin Ciraulo brings together the fields of liturgical studies, sacramental theology, and systematic theology to examine both how the Eucharist functions in Balthasar’s theology in general and how it is in fact generative of his most unique and consequential theological positions. He demonstrates that Balthasar is a eucharistic theologian of the highest caliber, and that his contributions to sacramental theology, although little acknowledged today, have enormous potential to reshape many discussions in the field. The chapters cover a range of themes not often included in sacramental theology, including the doctrine of the Trinity, the Incarnation, and soteriology. In addition to treating Balthasar’s own sources—Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, Pascal, Catherine of Siena, and Bernanos—Ciraulo brings Balthasar into conversation with contemporary Catholic sacramental theology, including the work of Louis-Marie Chauvet and Jean-Yves Lacoste. The overall result is a demanding but satisfying presentation of Balthasar’s contribution to sacramental theology. The audience for this volume is students and scholars who are interested in Balthasar’s thought as well as theologians who are working in the area of sacramental and liturgical theology.
