Book excerpt: The ASI workshop on "Selectivities in Lewis Acid Promoted Reactions" held in the Emmantina-Hotel in Athens-Glyfada, Greece, October 2-7, 1988 was held to bring some light into the darkness of Lewis acid induced processes. As such the workshop reflects some current trends in organic synthesis, where Lewis acids are becoming a powerful tool in many different modern reactions, e.g. Diels-Alder reactions, Ene reactions, Sakurai reactions, and in general silicon and tin chemistry. The objective of this meeting was to bring together most of the world experts in the field to discuss the major reactions promoted by Lewis acids. Organic synthesis will play a major role in this book connected with some fundamental mechanistic work on allylsilane and -tin chemistry. Both natural product synthesis and unnatural molecules are presented in the chapters. The book presents all the 15 invited lectures and the contributions of 15 posters. I am confident that the material presented in this book will stimulate the chemistry, which has been discussed on our meeting, around the world. When designing new Lewis acids, a synthetic chemist has to consider the properties of the Lewis acid. As such, this compilation describes the methods used in measuring Lewis acid strength, including a ladder diagram comparing the Lewis acid strength of both main group and metal-based Lewis acids. Since carboxylic acid derivatives are commercially available, non-toxic, cheap and normally stable to air and moisture, carboxylic acid derivatives are ideal reactants for synthetic strategy. The decarboxylative coupling reaction is discussed as one of the most important tools for organic synthesis, and remarkable progress has been made in this field. In conclusion, the authors highlight recent advances achieved in the development of processes for esters production from glycerol and terpenic alcohols in metal salts-catalyzed reactions, using acetic acid as the carbonylic reactant. The effects of main reaction parameters such as concentration, temperature and reactants stoichiometry are assessed. A comparison with traditional acid catalysts used in these reactions is also performed.

The topics covered include: combinatorial chemistry, new synthetic methods, stereo selective synthesis, metal-mediated synthesis, and target oriented synthesis. The book collects the contributions, in the mentioned topics, of 43 scientists from 19 different countries. The contributions presented in the Conference as plenary lectures are reported in the first section of the book. Particular attention has been dedicated to combinatorial chemistry, a new and promising methodology for the synthesis of libraries of pharmaco logically interesting compounds in order to allow the automatic pharmacological screening of thousands of compounds.
