Book Synopsis Explaining Human Origins by : Wiktor Stoczkowski
Download or read book Explaining Human Origins written by Wiktor Stoczkowski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wiktor Stoczkowski, a palaeo-anthropologist, argues that the theories of human origins developed by archaeologists and physical anthropologists from the early nineteenth century to the present day are structurally similar to Western folk theories, and to the speculations of earlier philosophers. Reviewing a remarkable range of thinkers writing in a variety of European languages, he makes a convincing argument for this case. Even though the book criticises the lack of development in theories of human origins, its conclusion is optimistic about the power of the scientific approach to deliver more reliable theories - but only if the influences of popular discourse on its thinking are properly identified.

Download or read book On Hysteria written by Sabine Arnaud and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysteria formed a medical category during the seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries. By tracing its transformations, Sabine Arnaud reveals what was at stake in writing the diagnosis and adds to our understanding of how the role and status of medicine became established in society. In the process she uncovers new insights in the history of medicine. Focusing on a period largely ignored by scholarship, she shows that hysteria was not, in fact, first seen as female malady and that discussions of convulsions in a religious context made up only a very small part of writings on hysteria. Widely treated in medical contexts, hysteria was also a common reference in literature, public political debates, and even philosophy. With careful attention to genres and writing strategies, webs of citation, and circulation, Arnaud provides a history of medicine as a history of knowledge in the making, knowledge that did not build linearly but through misinterpretation, creative citation, and strategic deployment.
Book Synopsis The Sciences in Enlightened Europe by : William Clark
Download or read book The Sciences in Enlightened Europe written by William Clark and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-07 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radically reorienting our understanding of the Enlightenment, this book explores the complex relations between "englightened" values and the making of scientific knowledge. Here monsters and automata, barometers and botanical gardens, polite academics and boisterous clubs, plans for violent wars and for universal peace, are all relocated in the landscape of enlightened Europe. The contributors show how changing forms of discipline, machinery, and instrumentation affected the emergence of new kinds of knowledge; consider how institutions of public rate taste and conversation helped provide a common frame for the study of human and nonhuman natures; and explore the regional operations of scientific culture at the geographical fringes of Europe. Covering a wide range of scientific disciplines, both in the principal European countries and in areas peripheral to Europe, the book also includes ample illustrations and an extensive bibliography. Implicated in the rise of both fascism and liberal secularism, the moral and political values that shaped the Enlightenment remain controversial today. Through careful scrutiny of how these values influenced and were influenced by the concrete practices of its sciences, this book gives us an entirely new sense of the Enlightenment. -- from back cover.

Book Synopsis The Bloomsbury Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers by : Heiner F. Klemme
Download or read book The Bloomsbury Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers written by Heiner F. Klemme and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bloomsbury Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers is a landmark work. Covering one of the most innovative centuries for philosophical investigation, it features more than 650 entries on the eighteenth-century philosophers, theologians, jurists, physicians, scholars, writers, literary critics and historians whose work has had lasting philosophical significance. Alongside well-known German philosophers of that era-Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Immanuel Kant, and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel-the Dictionary provides rare insights into the lives and minds of lesser-known individuals who influenced the shape of philosophy. Each entry discusses a particular philosopher's life, contributions to the world of thought, and later influences, focusing not only on their most important published writings, but on relevant minor works as well. Bibliographical references to primary and secondary source material are included at the end of entries to encourage further reading, while extensive cross-referencing allows comparisons to be easily made between different thinkers' ideas and practices. For anyone looking to understand more about the century when enlightenment thinking arrived in Germany and established conceits were challenged, The Bloomsbury Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers is a valuable, unparalleled resource.
