Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lettres on Elementary and Practical Education The results to be anticipated from a proper course in that respect, are of such vital interest to all classes in this distracted community, that the public mind should be directed to the subject of education. In a series of familiar letters, I intend to make an effort to agitate the public mind, on the all important subject of Elementary and Practical Education. I claim the indulgence of my readers; I have no pretensions to superiority of thought, what I would say, most of us know. My object is to draw public attention to a subject which is little attended to, probably from its being looked upon as too familiar; and like the elements of nature, earth, air, tire and water, as a matter of course, too commonplace, either to need investigation, or excite our interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His formal schooling abruptly cut off at age eleven, George Washington saw his boyhood dream of joining the British army evaporate and recognized that even his aspiration to rise in colonial Virginian agricultural society would be difficult. Throughout his life he faced challenges for which he lacked the academic foundations shared by his more highly educated contemporaries. Yet Washington's legacy is clearly not one of failure. Breaking new ground in Washington scholarship and American revolutionary history, Adrienne M. Harrison investigates the first president's dedicated process of self-directed learning through reading, a facet of his character and leadership long neglected by historians and biographers. In A Powerful Mind, Harrison shows that Washington rose to meet these trials through a committed campaign of highly focused reading, educating himself on exactly what he needed to do and how best to do it. In contrast to other famous figures of the revolution--Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin--Washington did not relish learning for its own sake, viewing self-education instead as a tool for shaping himself into the person he wanted to be. His two highest-profile and highest-risk endeavors--commander in chief of the Continental Army and president of the fledgling United States--are a testament to the success of his strategy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annual Address Delivered Before the Belles-Lettres and Union Philosophical Societies of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa;, July 19, 1837 Academical instruction must, of necessity, be elementary. The notion that youth can be qualified, either in primary schools or colleges, to assume at once the practice of any of the professions or callings of active life, surprises by its extreme simplicity. The real business of men is made up of practical and minute details, which nothing but experience in business can teach. A proposition so evident, every mind is ready to admit; and yet the idea to which we have adverted, has influenced, in no inconsiderable degree, the opinion of those who condemn the study of the ancient languages. It has manifestly swayed the speculations of the philosophic Mr. Combe. A young lady, says he, who can draw a very handsome cottage, could not rear a fabric corresponding to it. She is not an architect; and the difference between her and an architect consists in this: that she is defective in all the practical knowledge, skill, and experience, which are indispensable to render her design an actual house. A scholar in Greek and Latin is not a man of business, for a similar reason. He is not instructed in that knowledge of affairs and things that exist - the knowledge of which constitutes practical busi ness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Research on Writing ventures to sum up inquiry over the last few decades on what we know about writing and the many ways we know it: How do people write? How do they learn to write and develop as writers? Under what conditions and for what purposes do people write? What resources and technologies do we use to write? How did our current forms and practices of writing emerge within social history? What impacts has writing had on society and the individual? What does it mean to be and to learn to be an active participant in contemporary systems of meaning? This cornerstone volume advances the field by aggregating the broad-ranging, interdisciplinary, multidimensional strands of writing research and bringing them together into a common intellectual space. Endeavoring to synthesize what has been learned about writing in all nations in recent decades, it reflects a wide scope of international research activity, with attention to writing at all levels of schooling and in all life situations. Chapter authors, all eminent researchers, come from disciplines as diverse as anthropology, archeology, typography, communication studies, linguistics, journalism, sociology, rhetoric, composition, law, medicine, education, history, and literacy studies. The Handbook’s 37 chapters are organized in five sections: *The History of Writing; *Writing in Society; *Writing in Schooling; *Writing and the Individual; *Writing as Text This volume, in summing up what is known about writing, deepens our experience and appreciation of writing—in ways that will make teachers better at teaching writing and all of its readers better as individual writers. It will be interesting and useful to scholars and researchers of writing, to anyone who teaches writing in any context at any level, and to all those who are just curious about writing.

Each section includes a new introduction by the editors.
