Book Synopsis The Religious Enlightenment by : David Sorkin
Download or read book The Religious Enlightenment written by David Sorkin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sorkin is right to argue that enlightenment and faith went together for most participants in the Enlightenment, and that this is a major topic that has been relatively neglected. He has written an outstanding and eminently accessible book bringing the whole question centrally to scholars' attention. He skillfully demonstrates that all confessions and religious traditions found themselves very much in a common predicament and sought similar solutions."--Jonathan Israel, Institute for Advanced Study "Powerfully cogent. Sorkin seeks to show that the 'religious Enlightenment' was not a contradiction in terms but was an integral and central part of the Enlightenment. Anyone interested in the history of the Enlightenment in particular or the eighteenth century in general will want to read this book. Sorkin is one of the leading scholars working in the field. His scholarship is as wide as it is deep."--Tim Blanning, University of Cambridge
Book Synopsis Jean Chapelain Soixante-Dix-Sept Lettres Inedites a Nicolas Heinsius (1649–1658) by : Bernard Bray
Download or read book Jean Chapelain Soixante-Dix-Sept Lettres Inedites a Nicolas Heinsius (1649–1658) written by Bernard Bray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Reading between the lines – Leo Strauss and the history of early modern philosophy by : Winfried Schröder
Download or read book Reading between the lines – Leo Strauss and the history of early modern philosophy written by Winfried Schröder and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1952, Leo Strauss's Persecution and the Art of Writing has stirred considerable controversy, particularly among historians concerned with early modern philosophy. On the one hand, several scholars share his view that it would be inadequate to generally take at face value the explicit message of texts which were composed in an era in which severe sanctions were imposed on those who entertained deviating views. ‘Reading between the lines’ therefore seems to be the appropriate hermeneutical approach. On the other hand, the risks of such an interpretative maxim are more than obvious, as it might come up to an unlimited license to ascribe heterodox doctrines to early modern philosophers whose manifest teachings were in harmony with the orthodox positions of their time. The conributions to this volume both address these methodological issues and discuss paradigmatic cases of authors who might indeed be candidates for a Straussian ‘reading between the lines’: Hobbes, Spinoza, and Bayle.

Book Synopsis The Marquis d’Argens by : Julia Gasper
Download or read book The Marquis d’Argens written by Julia Gasper and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Marquis d’Argens: A Philosophical Life Julia Gasper analyzes the life and works of an influential Enlightenment writer and philosopher. The facts of d’Argens’ life as well as his works have been a source of controversy due to the many rumors and anonymous publications erroneously linked to him. Through meticulous research, Gasper provides the only comprehensive list of d’Argens’ works and separates the realities of his life from the myths that have built up around him. Accused of being a libertine or an unoriginal mimic of greater minds, d’Argens has too often been dismissed as an unimportant figure. Gasper defends this much maligned philosopher and reveals how imaginative and influential he truly was.
