Book Synopsis France and Britain, 1940-1994 by : P. M. H Bell
Download or read book France and Britain, 1940-1994 written by P. M. H Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in Philip Bell's study of Franco-British relations in the twentieth century It covers the period from the Fall of France in 1940 to the opening of the Channel Tunnel. Philip Bell views the half-century as a long separation - with France committed early on to a new concept of Europe, in partnership with Germany, whilst Britain stood apart. The tensions and resentments it has generated have kept French/British relations at the very heart of the burning question of Britain's place in Europe. Yet the story has another side, to which Philip Bell also does justice. Much has been achieved by the two countries together and alongside their European partners. For all their divergencies and antagonisms, the French and British know and understand each other better today than at any other time in their modern histories and all these developments are fully explored in Philip Bell's engrossing and often amusing, account.

Download or read book Anglo-American Policy towards the Free French written by G. Maguire and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of the tiny dissident movement that was Free France in 1940 into a broad-based, popularly supported provisional government. This metamorphosis was to a large extent dependent upon Allied support. Therefore this book discusses the individual attitudes of the British and American governments towards the Gaullist movement and tries to explain why they differed and how their points of view were eventually reconciled. In order to do this both the nature of Gaullism and the tensions in the Anglo-American relationship are considered.

Book Synopsis The Man Who Murdered Admiral Darlan by : Bénédicte Vergez-Chaignon

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1942 Anglo-American forces landed in French North Africa, which soon afterwards broke with Marshal Pétain’s Vichy regime in France and re-entered the war on the Allies’ side. On Christmas Eve the high commissioner Admiral François Darlan was assassinated in Algiers. Why? Like the press and public opinion in Britain and America, General Charles de Gaulle’s Free French movement and the resistance in France were appalled that the Allies had allowed Darlan to retain office, even though as prime minister under Pétain he had previously advocated military collaboration with Nazi Germany. Few mourned Darlan’s death, many were relieved, some were jubilant. His killer was Fernand Bonnier de la Chapelle. Who was this twenty year old and what drove him to murder? Bénédicte Vergez-Chaignon paints a sympathetic portrait of the young idealist manipulated by local resistance leaders. As she tells Bonnier’s story, the author illuminates the imbroglio of North Africa’s competing political forces. She traces Bonnier’s short life, the assassination, his court-martial and execution within 48 hours, the subsequent judicial investigations which became bogged down in the complex rivalry between the Allies, the remnants of the Vichy regime, the Resistance and other factions. The story ends with Bonnier’s posthumous rehabilitation and recognition as a member of the French Resistance. Bonnier’s biography reads like an absorbing novel, with its twists and turns, reconstructed dialogue and author’s acute observations. As well as being a tragic human story, It is an illuminating study of the convoluted political context of the affair, which will be unfamiliar to some Anglophone readers. It is an academically rigorous piece of original research, based in part on previously inaccessible family archives Bénédicte Vergez-Chaignon’s story of Darlan’s assassination was received in France as * ‘a shocking book and a historian’s great work’ (Le Patriote Résistant) * ‘a detailed enquiry ... bordering on a detective novel which brings out the conspiratorial atmosphere reigning in Algiers in the wake of the Allied landing of 8 November 1942’ (Le Monde des Livres) * it ‘shows the extent to which the 1940s were years of complete ambiguity’ (Le Figaro Littéraire) * ‘Bénédicte Vergez-Chaignon, a meticulous historian, paints the portrait of a young idealist dying to wash away the stain of defeat’ (Midi Libre).

This book was released on 1993-03-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the Maquis in southern France, the Resisters who took to the woods and hills in the struggle against the German Occupation in the Second World War. H. R. Kedward's detailed and perceptive account explores what participation in the Maquis meant for those involved both at the time and subsequently. He examines the motivations of the maquisards and how the circumstances of occupation and resistance affected the ways of life of rural communities in the south of France. This is a rich and original book, which achieves a fruitful integration of extensive archival research and oral history. Professor Kedward's scholarly and readable history allows the voices of individuals to be heard, and offers us important insights into the nature of community and regional tradition. From the many fascinating case-studies, fully supplemented by detailed maps, emerge a sense of place, a clearer understanding of the maquisard, and an unsentimental assessment of the place of the Maquis in French history. -
