This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Journal to Eliza" is a fictionalized account of Laurence Sterne's relationship with Eliza Draper, based on letters Sterne wrote to her. Laurence Sterne, a vicar of Coxwold, and celebrity author of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy met, at a London gathering, Eliza Draper, who was visiting England from her home in India. Eliza was 23 and had married – at the age of 14 – Daniel Draper, an East India Company employee, a man 30 years her senior. The house where Sterne and Eliza met was in Gerrard Street, Soho, and was owned by William James, ex-Commander-in-chief of the East India Company. The house had become a meeting place for East India employees. Sterne was 54, and a married vicar. When Eliza had to sail back to India three months later, Sterne wrote to her every day. The letters were developed into The Journal to Eliza, a fictionalized chronicle of their relationship, which shows a different side of Sterne from the witty high-spirited author of Tristram Shandy. The Brahmin caste is the priestly class of India. Given the Brahmin Hindu priestly caste is renowned for austerity and wisdom, Sterne thereby draws attention to his real-life role as a priest.
Book Synopsis ACROSS BORDERS AND TIME: JONATHAN SWIFT by : Csaba Maczelka

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume Across Borders and Time: Jonathan Swift contains the papers delivered at the conference The World of Swift; Swift and his World, which was dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of Jonathan Swift. The conference was held on 24-25 November 2017, at the House of Arts and Literature, Pécs, and jointly organised by the Institute of English Studies of Pécs University and SPECHEL, the latter of which is also the publisher of this volume in its series, SPECHEL e-ditions. It also benefited from the support provided by the Irish Embassy in Budapest. That year also marked the 650th anniversary of Hungary’s first university, founded in Pécs in 1367, and so the conference honoured that event, too. In this, the fifth SPECHEL e-dition, series editor Rouse joins up once again with SPECHEL member Gabriella Hartvig, an internationally respected scholar of the period and colleague at Pécs University, together with Irish Swiftian scholar David Clare. The volume comprises a selection of essays emanating from papers delivered at the conference celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Anglo-Irish writer Jonathan Swift, held in the anniversary year of 2017, and includes a paper delivered by the Irish Ambassador to Hungary that opened the conference. We are grateful to the Irish Embassy for their financial support, as well as to a number of local businesses and the Mayor’s Office of Pécs. The conference was organised by SPECHEL as part of the British and Irish Autumn 2017 series of events, and included a recital of the music of the Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738).

Book Synopsis The Emergence of a Hero by : Andrei Zorin
Download or read book The Emergence of a Hero written by Andrei Zorin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emergence of a Hero is dedicated to the history of Russian emotional culture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries - the epoch when the court Masonic lodges and literature were competing for the monopoly on the 'symbolic images of feeling' that an educated and Europeanised Russian was supposed to interiorize and reproduce. The case study in the centre of the study is the story of the life and death of Andrei Turgenev (1781-1803), the author of a confessional diary, a gifted poet, and an early Russian Romantic who failed to live up to the principles and models he cherished. Brought up on the patterns of emotions he found in works of Rousseau, Sterne, and the authors of Sturm and Drang, he soon found them too narrow for his individuality, and navigated towards a more mature nineteenth century Romanticism, but was not able to make this transition. Turgenev experimented not so much in his literary work as in his life. The reconstruction of this convoluted and enigmatic case is based on archival research and innovative analysis of individual emotional experience.
