Book excerpt: "It has been seventeen years since you went missing, princess. It has been twenty-five years since you were born. There have been too many Christmases without you ..." In the summer of 2000, schoolgirl Sarah Payne went missing from a beach where she played with her siblings. The nation waited with her whole family as the search for the little girl touched the hearts of everyone in the country. After Sarah's body was found, abducted and murdered by convicted pedophile Roy Whiting, her mother, Sara, spoke of how she had survived those terrible times. Now, seventeen years later, Sara wants to tell the full story of how she coped then, and how she has survived. Through a series of letters to her beloved daughter, she takes the reader on a heart-breaking but uplifting journey through every parent's worst nightmare in a moving account of the ultimate emotional survival. It is a story for the little girl who was taken, but a reminder to us all that hope never dies - and love never ends.

Book excerpt: Even when the bond with an adult brother or sister is extremely close, it seems that the ones who get the bulk of the concern after a sibling dies are the spouse and children (and the parents, if still living), not the brother or sister. When Anne McCurry's sister Sara died of breast cancer at age 54, Anne was devastated at losing her hero and best friend. She found little help or information anywhere in dealing with the overwhelming grief of adult sibling loss. Adding to the anguish of losing her only sister was the bewildering behavior of Sara's husband of 24 years, which included a total absence of grief and an immediate search for a new woman. Anne had a terrible need to "talk" to Sara about her paralyzing grief and about her brother-in-law's surprising behavior. She began writing letters to Sara, which became the basis for this non-fiction book. Interwoven throughout the letters is the story of Sara's illness, as well as discussion of numerous aspects of grief such as anticipatory grief, the stages of grieving, anniversary grief, survivor's guilt and the universality of grief. The letters also reveal Anne's dogged attempt to solve the mystery of her brother-in-law's hurtful behavior. In the end, she does. Written with poignancy, insight and some humor, Letters to Sara is a must read for anyone who has lost a much loved sibling.

Book excerpt: An epistolary portrait of the life and times of a Civil War soldier and family man as he transformed from simple Michigan country boy to seasoned fighter. Cpl. John H. Pardington, a member of the 24th Michigan Infantry of the famous Iron Brigade, was an articulate and observant soldier. The 80 letters collected in this volume are filled with patriotic dedication to the Union cause, longing for his wife and baby, details of camp life, and reflections on the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and other engagements. Their intimacy and warmth are made even more poignant by the knowledge that Pardington will be killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. Pardington reveals the stresses of war and comments on the heroics of everyday life, whether at home or on the battlefield. In messages to his sister and father-in-law, he shares his opinions of President Lincoln and the changing leadership of the Army of the Potomac, as well as his hopes for the outcome of the war. Full of wisdom and insight, this collection draws back the curtains on an ordinary life during the most extraordinary of times.

Book excerpt: Letters to Sarah is a rock autobiography with a difference. In addition to the exceptionally honest and endearing voice of Corky chronicling the ups and downs of his life, there are excerpts from dozens of letters (out of the c. 200) that Corky wrote to his mother, Sarah, between the years 1963 and 1997. She had saved them all. The letters were a way for Corky, away on the road for years on end, to keep in touch with his mother and also, to make sense of his life. This continues in Letters to Sarah, as Corky relives the first 50 years of his life, up until his mother's passing in 1998.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Excellent. This is a fine, and unusual, collection of literary Americana."--Atlantic "Fine comic moments of truth."--New York Times Book Review "An invaluable source of literary history."--Publishers Weekly This is the story of one of the most famous literary "sets" of the twentieth century. Gerald and Sara Murphy were at the center of a group including Ernest Hemingway and his wives, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Archibald MacLeish, Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woollcott, Robert Benchley, Phillip Barry, and many others. They personified the jazz age and the lost generation. The Murphys have been viewed primarily as cult/pop figures. In this book Miller shows, through a sequential interweaving of letters from several correspondents, that they actually were the nucleus without which the group as we know it would not have stayed together. Miller allows the individual correspondents to tell their own stories, providing new insights into their lives and this era. It is the best sort of eavesdropping. Gerald and Sara Murphy married on December 30, 1915. Both families were moneyed and cosmopolitan. Their attraction to each other was in part based on their desire to escape the routine and predictable social rounds in which their families were immersed. Against their families' wishes, they and their three children left for Europe in 1921. They remained in France for over a decade, and quite naturally socialized with the expatriate set. They were, in part, models for Dick and Nicole Diver in Tender Is the Night. MacLeish wrote poems about them, their friends paid tribute to them and relied on them day to day and in correspondence, and their own letters are worth reading for their liveliness and because they so well preserve a record of the twenties and thirties. Miller provides nearly every extant letter between the Murphys and their friends during those decades. Most of them have not been published previously, and of course, they have never been presented collectively. Together, they constitute an epistolary "novel" of peculiar power and authenticity about a remarkable era. Linda Patterson Miller is associate professor of English at Pennsylvania State University at Ogontz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah Hutchinson has never been much more than a name, though a name connected with some of the greatest in English literature. The sister of Mrs. Wordsworth, and a member of the Wordsworth household for thirty years, Coleridge's beloved Asra to whom many of his poems were written, Southey's friend and Lamb's, and a guest of the Arnolds at Rugby, she was a member of an interesting circle. For her intimate relations to Wordsworth and Coleridge it has long been apparent that we should like to know her better. Now her letters to members of her family and to friends demonstrate how worthwhile it is to know her for herself as well. The letters come from the family and from the Wordsworth collection at Dove Cottage and are here printed (almost in full) for the first time. They show a lively and amusing woman, kind, forthright to the extent of bluntness, especially when she takes up the cudgels in the cause of what she considers truth or justice or human kindness. Coleridge describes her in one apt and characteristic sentence: 'If Sense, Sensibility, Sweetness of Temper, perfect simplicity and unpretending Nature, joined to shrewdness and entertainingness make a valuable Woman, Sara Hutchinson is so.' Such qualities certainly make a delightful letter-writer.

She was trapped, you see. Not in the conventional fairy-tale way—this was the dreaded after-school Homework Club. A desolate place, where no gum could be chewed, and where Rapunzel sat day after day, cursing the evil spell that had been cast over her father. The doctors called it something else, but a true heroine can smell an evil spell a mile away. So when a mysterious letter addressed to P.O. Box #5667 falls into her hands, she knows she's found the pea under her mattress. But since when is finding happily ever after as simple as Just Writing Back? Winner of the Ursula Nordstrom Fiction Contest, Sara Lewis Holmes's enchanting debut novel is a breath of fresh air. Told through letters, with a liberal sprinkling of fairy dust, Rapunzel's quest for a happy ending gives every reader something to believe in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it that distinguishes Texas women—the famous Yellow Rose and her descendants? Is it that combination of graciousness and grit that we revere in First Ladies Laura Bush and Lady Bird Johnson? The rapier-sharp wit that Ann Richards and Molly Ivins used to skewer the good ole boy establishment? The moral righteousness with which Barbara Jordan defended the US constitution? An unnatural fondness for Dr Pepper and queso? In her inimitable style, Sarah Bird pays tribute to the Texas Woman in all her glory and all her contradictions. She humorously recalls her own early bewildered attempts to understand Lone Star gals, from the big-haired, perfectly made-up ladies at the Hyde Park Beauty Salon to her intellectual, quinoa-eating roommates at Seneca House Co-op for Graduate Women. After decades of observing Texas women, Bird knows the species as few others do. A Love Letter to Texas Women is a must-have guide for newcomers to the state and the ideal gift to tell any Yellow Rose how special she is.
