Book excerpt: Laurens encloses a copy of the Pennsylvania Gazette which includes an Act of Congress for publishing those portions of the Treaty of Paris which Congress has deemed "necessary for public information. The clerks have been so busy copying the treaties that Laurens has not gotten certified copies for the states, but he promises to forward them when he receives them. Laurens closes by mentioning that he has sent a letter to Governor Johnson containing "Reported News from Philadelphia important if true" and requests that Henry pass it on to Governor Caswell. Laurens began his career as a lieutenant colonel in a campaign against the Cherokee Indians 1757-1761. He served in the Continental Congress from 1777-1780, presiding as President from November 1, 1777, to December 9, 1778. Appointed Minister to Holland, Laurens' vessel was captured and he was held in the Tower of London for over a year before he was exchanged; he then joined the committee negotiating the peace and signed the preliminary treaty of Paris on November 30, 1782.
