Bross, a Chicago lawyer, married with a child, who volunteered in 1862 as an officer in the Army of the Cumberland, fought at the battles of Perryville, Stones River, and Chickamauga, then raised the only African-American regiment from Illinois and was killed leading his troops at the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864. His letters describe daily life in the army as well as scenes of battle, and glow with love for his wife Belle and his little boy Mason. The biography describes life in the rapidly growing Chicago of the 1850s and gives details of Lincoln

Book excerpt: The John Lovejoy Murray collection of letters contains insights into the experiences of an African American soldier and his regiment during the Civil War. John Lovejoy Murray, a private in Company E, 102nd USCT, died of disease in a Charleston hospital on April 12, 1865. Through John Murray's letters, readers can experience the war through the eyes of a literate northern Black soldier. His is the story of the soldiers who did not receive accolades for their heroic actions in battle, the ones who spent more time on picket and fatigue duty than on the front lines, the ones who died from disease more than they did of battle-related wounds. Murray's letters are significant because they are ordinary in some respects yet extraordinary in others. Some of the activities and sentiments portrayed in the letters are hardly distinguishable from those described in letters written by White soldiers. In other ways, the letters represent a perspective distinctly from a Black soldier in the Union army. Although many of his experiences may have been typical, John Lovejoy Murray himself, a literate, freeborn, northern Black man, was atypical among Union Black soldiers.

Book excerpt: John Armstrong Bross is forgotten today, while Robert Gould Shaw, the commander portrayed by Matthew Broderick in the film, "Glory," gained fame immediately upon his death that has endured. Both events are remarkably similar--two young Union colonels who lead African-American troops and who died very nearly one year apart. This long-forgotten volume was published for Bross' friends and family in Chicago. But it has much wider appeal as the story of a man who was deeply committed to doing what he felt was his duty during the Civil War. He was proud of his troops and they loved him because he treated them like men.He fell in battle with them at the crater in the siege of Petersburg on July 30, 1864.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Book excerpt: This collection of 139 letters from six of the seven Gould brothers who left their homes in central New York to fight for the Union Army forms a moving depiction, not only of life on the front lines of the Civil War, but of life on the home front as well. These letters, written to their beloved sister Hannah, span the entire four years of the conflict and run the gamut from initial enlistment to eventual death or discharge. Through the eyes of the Goulds, an immigrant English family struggling to make a new life, one is able to experience this major American historical event with a new understanding. Unfortunately, Hannah's letters to her brothers at the front are lost forever, victims of the fighting; but the vivid responses of her brothers speak to her own questions and concerns about the crisis that was tearing families apart. With only minor annotation and amendment, these letters tell a most important story of separation and domestic change. They reveal the plight of an individual family in the midst of turmoil.
