It was in the home of Vincent Novello that Mrs. Shelley and Jane Williams sought rest and sympathy after the poet's tragic death. When visiting Charles and Mary Lamb, and while wandering in their flower garden, Mrs. Clarke first determined to undertake the task of compiling a Concordance to Shakespeare, and to this work she gave sixteen years of her life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men Letters Enthusiastic lovers of golf have been heard to justify their enthusiasm by alleging that their favourite game can be played from morning till night, from the first of january to the 3rst of December, and from the schoolroom to the grave. The boy who loves Homer and Virgil makes friends for life. They are no fair weather companions. They remained with Tennyson till his death. They moulded and coloured his verse. I that loved thee since my days began, ' he says of the Mantovano.' In his last volume, the aftermath of a glorious harvest, he returns to the old subject of Paris and (enone. The half-century which rolled between the first (enone and the second had not diminished the reverent affection of the author for the old names and characters, the forms more real than living man, nurslings of immortality. Quintus Calaber was not a sublime poet. He continued Homer neither well nor wisely. He is perhaps better known as Quintus. Smyrnaeus, and is scarcely worth knowing at all. Tennyson was the first to describe (enone deserted by Paris, as Ariadne was deserted by Theseus, but with no Dionysus to console her. Everybody remembers the opening lines. There lies a vale in Ida, lovelier Than all the valleys of Ionian hills. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love Letters of a Genius: Being a Translation of Prosper Merimee's "Lettres A Une Inconnue" It is a mere platitude to say that every man has an inner life: emotional, spiritual, what you will; of which only in rare moments of expansion he gives a fleeting glimpse to the few who know him well. And to the sympathetic friend such moments are moments of surpassing interest. The man of genius, whose art reaches the imagination and touches the heart of a world beyond the circle of his intimate friends, finds an audience inspired with a very human curiosity to know something of the inner life of which they have only seen the intellectual expression. But it is seldom that such curiosity is gratified. In the world's history there have been few great men who have willingly laid bare their souls for the edification of the multitude. Prosper Merimee was not a great man. Nevertheless, his exquisite grace of style has ensured him a permanent place in the history of the French Literature of the nineteenth century. It is not proposed to write his biography here: there should be some justification for the translator's hope that these Letters will rouse sufficient interest in the reader to impel him to seek elsewhere for knowledge of the life and character of their author. Meanwhile, two words will suffice to explain why the publication of these Letters in 1873, three years after his death, created such a sensation in Paris. Little of Merimee's work is known in England, but his genius has dominated the imagination of his countrymen. And, perhaps, his ascendency has been enhanced by the strangely-contrasted qualities of his personality: qualities that, nevertheless, detracted from his popularity. Here and there from a few of the letters in a large sequence written very long ago. Parts of it contain matter of permanent interest. Readers are advised to pass over the earlier pages, regard ing these as merely the entrance into the intercourse after wards reached - unless, indeed, anyone may feel disposed to linger a moment to join with the septuagenarian Editor in a smile at the young Professor's enthusiastic expectations of his pupil's future in literature, expectations destined - such is the irony of history - never to be fulfilled. Dear Arthur: - My soul's friend-yes, I believe I can, with perfect abandon, tell you all. There are moments when you seem, in reality, my other self. I feel it will bring relief to lay my breast up close to your own while we mutually feel the beating of the Infinite Heart through an "uncut cord."
