Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth Advocated: In Letters, Addressed to the Presbyterians In the Christian Repository, a paper published in Wilmington, Delaware, a writer under the signature of Paul, has attacked the religious society of Friends. He has been answered by a member of that society, under the title of Amicus. After what has been done in our defence, it would seem to be a work of supererogation to add any thing further. But the reader, if he has perused those publications, will perceive that I have here replied to charges, which Amicus from their multiplicity has been obliged to pass over in silence; and when I have taken up the same subjects which Amicus has noticed, I have treated them differently. I do not mean by this to be understood as depreciating the labours of that writer. The ability and temper with which he has managed his side of the controversy, against a very unfair antagonist, will, I think, be generally acknowledged: I do not intend, therefore, to occupy his ground. Be his the task of continuing to expose the sophistry of the author, mine to unfold the character of the man: and whilst Amicus leaves him in his mask, I shall uncover him and present him before the public as a Presbyterian minister. The assault made by this writer, being supported by no kind of evidence, yet seasoned by the coarsest and most virulent abuse, when viewed in the abstract, calls for no further animadversion. But I have been induced to notice it, under a belief that it constitutes an entering wedge, preparatory to a more extensive field of operations, before which all opposition to the ambitious views of a hireling priesthood, is to be prostrated. And I think I shall be able to present to the impartial reader, in these letters, no slender evidence that this belief arises neither from invidious feelings, nor an overweening credulity. The best-known collection today is Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, first published in 1929. Two other letter collections appeared around the same time and gained high acclaim among readers yet are virtually unknown today. They are Letters to a Young Woman (1930) and Letters on God (1933). With this volume, Annemarie S. Kidder makes available to an English-speaking audience two of the earliest collections of Rilke letters published after his death. The thematic collection On God-- here published in English for the first time--contains two letters by Rilke, the first an actual letter written during World War I, in 1915 in Munich, the second a fictional one composed after the war, in 1922 at Muzot, in Switzerland. In these letters, Rilke builds on the mystical view of God conceived of in The Book of Hours, but he moves beyond it, demonstrating a unique vision of God and Christ, the church and religious experience, friendship and death. The collection Letters to a Young Woman comprises nine of Rilke's letters, written to a young admirer, Lisa Heise, over the course of five years, from 1919 to 1924. Rufus Bailey, who to quote the tribute of a biographer, was a man of superior ability, who could not have resided anywhere without being felt as a power in the community. Supported by a group of Presbyterian ministers and laymen, he opened the Seminary with the avowed purpose to afford the means of a thorough literary and religious education to the female youth of this part of the country. In 1843 the first permanent building was erected on a lot belonging to the Presbyterian church, with a guarantee from the church trustees that the seminary should have possession in perpetuity of the said building, provided always that the institution be directed by a board of which three - fourths should be ministers or members of the Old School Presbyterian Church. In 1849, after seven years of valued service, Mr. Bailey resigned his connection with the seminary. His portrait hangs today in the parlor of Mary Baldwin College.
