Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Condition of the People of Ireland The letters which form this book were written during a tour of five months over nearly every part of Ireland, and were first published at intervals in The Times newspaper, immediately after they were written, in the period between August, 1845, and January, 1846. The letters were originally written in consequence of a commission offered to me, by that great public journal, which I undertook to perform, to lay before the public, in a readable form, my impressions during a tour through Ireland, and to state what, of the many prevailing opinions and anomalies, on careful observation, appeared to me to be the true condition of the Irish people. In undertaking this duty, I was unshackled and undirected by any further instructions whatever. In the course of its fulfilment, I conceived it to be desirable, not only to depict the actual condition of the Irish people, but to examine into the causes which led to that condition, and to suggest, as I proceeded, what appeared to me to be the most feasible remedies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Ireland The following pages would have appeared six months earlier, but for various hindrances which delayed the work of filling up what was but a brief outline. That they should appear at all may be deemed by some readers matter of apology also; but at a period when such strenuous efforts are made to place in different and opposing lights the country and the people referred to, it seemed desirable to add to the collection even such a sketch as this, taken recently from the life. Facts, rather than inferences, are adduced: and if it be objected, that too much of a private and personal nature is interspersed with what concerns the public, it may be pleaded in excuse that not a small portion of English readers are still misled by prejudice or mistake, in their calculations regarding the Irish character. The writer has had many discussions with friends who, desirous of seeing and judging for themselves of this most debateable land, were deterred from gratifying that laudable wish by a degree of bodily fear. Their imagination represented a succession of perilous obstacles, of which the least formidable menaced highway robbery, or submersion in an unfathomable bog. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Irish Highlands of Cunnemarra The favour with which these Letters have been received and read in England may seem to make it quite unnecessary to repeat the apology which was formerly given for their publication; but a few explanatory remarks, with respect to the chief object of the members of the family party who have written them, will probably be expected, and may perhaps be useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disturbed Ireland: Being the Letters Written During the Winter of 1880-81 Having been most cordially granted permission to republish these letters in a collected form, it is my duty to mention that my mission from the Bail News was absolutely unfettered, either by instructions or introductions. It was thought that an independent and impartial account of the present condition of the disturbed districts of Ireland would be best secured by sending thither a writer without either Irish politics or Irish friends - in short, one who might occupy the stand-point of the too-often-quoted "intelligent foreigner." Hence my little book is purely descriptive of the stirring scenes and deeply interesting people I have met with on my way through the counties of Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Cork, and Kerry. It is neither a political treatise, nor a dissertation on the tenure of land, but a plain record of my experience of a strange phase of national life. Burke once asked; and if the same question were at this day asked in respect to Burke himself, what would be the answer? Certainly not that he is read anything like as much as he deserves to be read. We English make far too little use of our prose classics, - far less than the French make of theirs. The place which a writer like Pascal, for instance, fills in French education, and in the minds of cultivated Frenchmen in general, how different is it from the place which Burke fills in our reading and thoughts, and how much larger! Shakespeare and Milton we are all supposed to know something of; but of none of our prose classics, I think, if we leave stories out of the account, such as are the Pilgrim's Progress and the Vicar of Wakefield, are we expected to have a like knowledge. Perhaps an exception is to be made for Bacon's Essays, but even of this I do not feel sure. Our grandfathers were bound to know their Addison, but for us the obligation has ceased; nor is that loss, indeed, a very serious matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Niall the Grand and Others, on Irish History, Bulls of Adrian, Etc;, Etc: Dedicated to the Fenians and the Friends of Ireland If he applies the word on religious grounds, I say to him, though by no means willing to play the hypocrite, I believe myself at least as good a Catholic as he. I have nothing to say against the religious portion of Catholicity. It is the creed of every one belonging to me - the creed I was taught at the knees of a loving mother; but with that part of it that has become a political machine, to the injury of my country and its votaries, and would barter their liberty and their lives, i hold no sympathy. When a man combines in his person the character of a politician with that of an expounder and inculcator of Christian precepts and Chris tian virtues - that is, when he uses or rather prostitutes the influence, attached to his' position as moral teacher, in gain ing his own selfish object or in gratifying his vanity, to the detriment of those the faithful guardian of whose interests he pretends to be, Icannot conscientiously approve of his worldly inclination or confide in his interpretation of Chris tian or moral obligations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland, as I Saw It: The Character, Condition, and Prospects of the People You ask me to publish an account of my travels in the Old World, for your gratification, and for the instruction of your children. You flatter me, when you compliment my Letters, and say you want a book written in my peculiar style - plain, familiar, and off-hand, and yet so minute in its details that others may see what I saw, and feel as I felt. You impose on me a difficult task, and one I feel myself incapable of performing to my own satisfaction, much less to yours. Still, I am anxious to please you, and willing to help amuse your children and, knowing that you will be rather generous than critical, I venture to offer you the following pages On Ireland. Whether other volumes, on other countries, will follow it, de pends upon circumstances not Wholly under my control. For this, I bespeak your favorable consideration. The numerous calls upon my time, the duties of my vocation, and the state of my health, have delayed the appearance of the present work, and prevented me from doing little more than fill up my notes, sketched during such leisure moments as I could find while performing my journey. I went to see and learn - to gratify myself and, to refresh my memory in after years, I made as copious notes as possible - jetted down, at the time, such thoughts, impressions, and incidents as occurred to me. I did not take much pains to reckon time or measure proportions, in a way to give minute descriptions. Historical and statistical facts are only introduced to add vivid ness to the pictures drawn. I traveled neither as philosopher, sage, or poet, but simply asa plain republican, curious to see, and anxious to learn all I could, in a given time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of an Irish Catholic Layman: Being an Examination of the Present State of the Irish Affairs in Relation to the Irish Church and the Holy See (1883-4) The conclusion naturally flowing from these premises is this That while the Irish people will go on, as they have every natural and Divine right to do, to conquer the freedom to live in their own way in their own country, the Castle ecclesiastic who has abandoned and opposed them, who in the hour Of supreme struggle has taken sides with the enemy, will have in the new Ireland rapidly being made a very different position from that which he held in the Old. At best he may find, as the French ecclesiastic Of to-day, his ministrations accepted, but himself extruded from the social movements and political life of a country where he might have enjoyed the fulness of his proper influence and authority.
