Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Travel From Different Lands The custom of writing a preface to any book which may be sent out into the world, is so universal, that I but follow in the footsteps of others in writing one for mine. These letters have been written at different times, some of them as far back as 1872. A few of them were originally published in the New York World. Many have appeared in the Times-Republican, of Marshalltown, Iowa, the present year. Often written in haste, and under great disadvantages, I do not claim for them great literary merit or descriptions of lands and scenes not often described by others. I have simply aimed to instruct a little, amuse some, and entertain the readers as well. If this little volume pleases my friends and helps to make others, I shall be satisfied. I will dedicate it to Hon. J. L. Williams, Gen. B. A. Beeson, Geo. B. McCord, Tom McElroy, E. H. Hibben, all of Marshalltown, Iowa, and to A. Casteller, banker, of Blair, Nebraska, all of whom have helped bear the financial risk of the publication; also to my wife, Eme Sanford, who, of course, regards this as the most wonderful work of the Nineteenth Century. I have been forced to this action by the enterprise of various publishers who, not content with disinterring old newspaper work from the decent seclusion of the office files, have in several instances seen fit to embellish it with additions and interpolations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Travel Mam Later the same word, pursued on the same principle as that blessed one Mesopotamia, led me to and through Emerson, up to his poem on the peak itself - the wise old giant busy with his sky affairs, ' who makes us sane and sober and free from little things if we trust him. So Monadnock came to mean everything that was helpful, healing, and full of quiet, and when I saw him half across New Hampshire he did not fail. In that utter stillness a hemlock bough, overweighted with snow, came down a foot or two with a tired little sigh the snow slid off and the little branch flew nodding back to its fellows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Abroad A few miles from the former place, we passed a picturesque gorge, which forms the present frontier between France and Italy. Characteristic differences soon appear, not in the country, as I have said, but in the prevalence of the Italian language in the notices on the walls and the names of the shops. The French authorities are doing all they can to banish the Italian from the annexed provinces. They will allow the celperz'ezcm, for instance, a license to sell Protestant bibles in French, but not in Italian. Partly to gratify friends, and partly to while away rainy days, I commenced writing letters to'the Louisville Journal; and the favorable manner in which they were received induced me to continue them throughout a tour of eighteen months. At the solicitation of the;same friends, I have collected these letters into a volume, with a hope that those of the public who may read them, may not find them wholly uninteresting. It is almost useless to say, that they are not presented to the world as a book of travels they are simply what the title of the volume declares them to be letters from the celebrated places on the three older conti nents. Written among the scenes they attempt to describe, they give the candid impressions of the moment, 'however these might be Opposed to the ordinarily received opinions. I fear I have often been too frank to be popular; but as; make no pretensions to infallibility, my opinions must pass for what they are worth. The letters on the English seem, even to myself, upon after-perusal, too general, and perhaps too severe, ih their denunciations but as they rec'orded the impressions made upon me at the time, and as I wish to give the letters as they originally appeared, I shall make no alterations. Ifvolume fails, I shall be. Consoled a few, at least will be pleased lasting form; if it succeeds I shall experience which all but especially the young, tion of their countrymen. The author.
