Book Synopsis Mark Twain's Letters, Volume 3 by : Mark Twain
Download or read book Mark Twain's Letters, Volume 3 written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-07-28 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Don't scold me, Livy—let me pay my due homage to your worth; let me honor you above all women; let me love you with a love that knows no doubt, no question—for you are my world, my life, my pride, my all of earth that is worth the having." These are the words of Samuel Clemens in love. Playful and reverential, jubilant and despondent, they are filled with tributes to his fiancée Olivia Langdon and with promises faithfully kept during a thirty-four-year marriage. The 188 superbly edited letters gathered here show Samuel Clemens having few idle moments in 1869. When he was not relentlessly "banged about from town to town" on the lecture circuit or busily revising The Innocents Abroad, the book that would make his reputation, he was writing impassioned letters to Olivia. These letters, the longest he ever wrote, make up the bulk of his correspondence for the year and are filled with his acute wit and dazzling language. This latest volume of Mark Twain's Letters captures Clemens on the verge of becoming the celebrity and family man he craved to be. This volume has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and by a major donation to the Friends of The Bancroft Library from the Pareto Fund.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Among the topics covered are: 1) the special presence of God in physical objects in the OT, 2) comparison of the indwelling & the Real Presence, 3) doubting disciples in the eucharistic discourse of John 6, 4) exclusion of non-Catholics from Catholic communion, 5) St. Augustine's & John Calvin's views, 6) the Church fathers on the Sacrifice of the Mass, 7) St. Paul's ""priestly"" references, 8) biblical, analogical arguments for the Sacrifice of the Mass, 9) the Protestant ""idolatry"" accusation, and 10) biblical evidence for wholehearted formal, liturgical worship. The facts of Church history are also examined in depth, with much corroboration from Protestant scholarly sources. Armstrong's explanations help to make Catholic teachings on the Holy Eucharist & the Mass understandable, plausible, & easily harmonized with the teaching of the Bible.
Book Synopsis Calvin and the Early Reformation by : Brian C. Brewer
Download or read book Calvin and the Early Reformation written by Brian C. Brewer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who have a passing knowledge of John Calvin’s theology and reforms in Geneva in the sixteenth century may picture the confident and mature theologian and preacher without appreciating the various events, people, and circumstances that shaped the man. Before there was Protestantism’s first and eminent systematic theologian, there was the French youth, the law student and humanist, the Protestant convert and homeless exile, the reluctant reformer and anguished city leader. Snapshots of the young Calvin create a collage that give a bigger picture to the grey-bearded Protestant reformer. Eleven scholars of early-modern history have joined in this volume to depict the people, movements, politics, education, sympathizers, nemeses, and controversies from which Calvin immerged in his young adulthood.

Book excerpt: Many factors contributed to the Protestant Reformation, but one of the most significant was the debate over the doctrine of justification by faith alone. In fact, Martin Luther argued that justification is the doctrine on which the church stands or falls. This comprehensive volume of 26 essays from a host of scholars explores the doctrine of justification from the lenses of history, the Bible, theology, and pastoral practice—revealing the enduring significance of this pillar of Protestant theology.
Book Synopsis His Love Endures Forever by : Garry J. Williams
Download or read book His Love Endures Forever written by Garry J. Williams and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is love—there are few more quoted statements from all of Scripture. Although wonderfully simple, the idea that God is fundamentally loving is incredibly profound. And yet, sometimes we confuse God’s love with our human understanding of love—an understanding that is inherently imperfect, sometimes self-serving, and often fickle. Helping us walk in the belief that God is love—not that love is God—this book explores what the Bible actually teaches about how and what God loves. Readers will discover that, although we often misunderstand, misuse, and take for granted God’s love, it’s actually more wonderful, pure, and satisfying than we ever imagined.
Download or read book After Calvin written by Richard A. Muller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sequel to Richard Muller's The Unaccomodated Calvin OUP 2000). In the previous book, Muller attempted to situate Calvin's theological work in their historical context and to strip away various twentieth-century theological grids that have clouded our perceptions of the work of the Reformer. In the present book, Muller carries this approach forward, with the goal of overcoming a series of nineteenth- and twentieth-century theological frameworks characteristic of much of the scholarship on Reformed orthodoxy, or what might be called "Calvinism after Calvin."
Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 19 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 19 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive new volume of the retirement papers of Thomas Jefferson This volume’s 601 documents show Jefferson dealing with various challenges. He is injured in a fall at Monticello, and his arm is still in a sling months later when he narrowly escapes drowning during a solitary horseback ride. Jefferson obtains temporary financial relief by transferring a $20,000 debt from the Bank of the United States to the College of William and Mary. Aided by a review of expenditures by the University of Virginia that uncovers no serious discrepancies, Jefferson and the Board of Visitors obtain a further $60,000 loan that permits construction to begin on the Rotunda. Jefferson drafts but apparently does not send John Adams a revealing letter on religion. He exchanges long letters discussing the Supreme Court with Justice William Johnson, and he writes to friends about France’s 1823 invasion of Spain. Jefferson also helps prepare a list of recommended books for the Albemarle Library Society. In November 1822, Jefferson’s grandson Francis Eppes marries Mary Elizabeth Randolph. He gives the newlyweds his mansion at Poplar Forest and visits it for the last time the following May. In a letter to James Monroe, Jefferson writes and then cancels “my race is near it’s term, and not nearer, I assure you, than I wish.”
