Book Synopsis Letters of Louis D. Brandeis: Volume III, 1913-1915 by : Louis D. Brandeis
Download or read book Letters of Louis D. Brandeis: Volume III, 1913-1915 written by Louis D. Brandeis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1973-06-30 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the election of Woodrow Wilson in 1912, Louis D. Brandeis emerged as the undisputed intellectual leader of those reformers who were trying to recreate a democratic society free from the economic and political depradations of monopolistic enterprise. But now these reformers had a champion in the White House, and direct access to him through one of his most trusted advisers. In this volume we see what was probably the high point of progressive reform—the first three years of the Wilson Administration. During these years Brandeis was considered for a Cabinet position, consulted frequently on matters of patronage, and called in at key junctures to determine policy. But he still kept up his many obligations to different reform groups: arguing cases before the Supreme Court, acting as public counsel in rate hearings, writing Other People's Money, one of the key exposés of the era, as well as advising his good friend Robert M. LaFollette and other reform leaders. Yet at the height of his career as a reformer, Brandeis suddenly took on another heavy obligation, the leadership of the American Zionist movement, and helped marshal Jews in this country to aid their brethren in war-ravaged Europe and Palestine. Carrying over his democratic ideals, he challenged the established American Jewish aristocracy in the Congress movement, in order to broaden the base of Jewish participation in important issues. At the end of 1915, Brandeis was an important figure not only in domestic reform and Jewish affairs, but on the international scene as well. And although no one knew it at the time, he stood at the brink of nomination to the nation's highest court. As in the earlier volumes, these letters indicate the inner workings of American reform, and they also show how American Zionism, under the leadership of Brandeis and his lieutenants, assumed those characteristics that would make it a unique and powerful instrument in world politics.

Book Synopsis Law, Society, and Economy by : Richard Rawlings
Download or read book Law, Society, and Economy written by Richard Rawlings and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This centenary volume of essays explores a number of related themes which differentiate and characterize the approach of the LSE. Central to this, is the assumption that law is one of the social sciences and that law should be studied "in context" as a social phenomenon. The contributors havebeen chosen both for their distinction and for their connection with the LSE, and include such eminent figures as Mrs Justice Arden, Judge Rosalyn Higgins, Sir Stephen Sedley, and Roberto Mangabeira Unger. The essays focus on three main subject areas: Law and Economy; Dimensions of Law; and Courts and Process which are discussed against the broader canvas of the School's approach to Law . Thus, Comaroff, Cohen, Unger and Teubner adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, stressing both legaland social theory, while the contributions of Cranston, Cornish and others stress an internationalist approach. A characteristic LSE focus on the dynamic nature of law runs through the work of Collins, Higgins and Lord Wedderburn, while a reformist tradition (allied with concern for the practical)is explored alongside the introduction of new legal subjects into the curriculum.Fascinating and thought provoking, this volume is an accesible summary of current thought and debate presented by today's leading scholars and practioners. Law, Society and Economy will be of enduring interest to scholars and practioners worldwide, akin to Ginsberg's celebrated and widely citedvolume of essays which marked the School's fiftieth anniversary.
Book Synopsis Letters of Comfort by : Anton P. Trichardt
Download or read book Letters of Comfort written by Anton P. Trichardt and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first thoroughgoing analysis of the contractual effect of letters of comfort as it appears in both common law and civil law systems. The commentary draws on cases from a wide variety of jurisdictions and on the full range of legal scholarship on the subject in several languages. Among the specific issues and topics raised along the way are the following: the typology of letters of comfort; the legal nature of letters of comfort; the use of letters of comfort in corporate group and banking practice; the economic explanation for the use of letters of comfort; the contractual effect of letters of comfort in French law; ‘ten commandments’ of letters of comfort; Clearly evoking the tension between business needs, the law, and judicial application, the book analyses what happens when the relationship between a lender and a creditor breaks down, or the latter becomes insolvent, and courts or arbitrators are asked to determine the legal status of a comfort letter. This is an area of practice in which lawyers in any field of business activity are inevitably concerned, and in which useful guidance is scarce. For this reason this detailed analysis will be very welcome.
