Book excerpt: This is the story of four 18th-century sisters, Caroline, Emily, Louisa and Sarah Lennox, great-grandchildren of Charles II, whose extraordinary lives spanned the period 1740-1832. Caroline eloped with an ambitious politician, Henry Fox; her son, Charles James Fox, was the most famous opposition politician of his century. Emily first married the senior peer of Ireland, but after having 19 children she scandalized society by marrying their humble Scottish tutor. Louisa and Sarah led equally tumultuous lives.

Book excerpt: A biography of the 18th century revolutionary Edward Fitzgerald, the son of Emily Lennox, one of the sisters featured in ARISTOCRATS. The book naturally follows on from ARISTOCRATS and is planned to make, with her third book, a trilogy which describes the fortunes of the extended Lennox family between 1740 and 1850. Edward Fitzgerald was born in 1763. He spent his childhood in Ireland. 1780 he joined the army and sailed to America where he fought in the war for Independence. Back home he was elected to Irish Parliament and became a member of the Irish opposition. His political interests became increasingly radical, and he was eventually embroiled in the Irish rebellion, dying in prison. His life was extraordinary colourful and dramatic- as complex and interesting in its political dimension as in his love life. A magnificent sequel to ARISTOCRATS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Craven’s fascinating life was full of travel, love-affairs and scandals but this biography, the first to appear for a century, is the only one to focus on her as a writer and draw attention to the full range of her output, which raises her stature as an author considerably. Born into the upper class of Georgian England, she was pushed into marriage at sixteen to Lord Craven and became a celebrated society hostess and beauty, as well as mother to seven children. Though acutely conscious of her relative lack of education, as a woman, she ventured into writing poetry, stories and plays. Incompatibility and infidelities on both sides ended her marriage and she had to move to France where, living in seclusion, she wrote the little-known feminist work Letters to Her Son. In the years that followed, she travelled extensively all over Europe and turned her letters into a travelogue which is one of her best-known works. On her return she went to live in Germany as the companion and eventually second wife of the Margrave of Ansbach. At his court she organised and appeared in theatricals, and wrote several more plays of great interest, including The Modern Philosopher. In 1792 she and the Margrave settled in England, where they were never fully accepted by the more strait-laced pillars of society but mixed with all the musicians and actors and the more rakish of the Regency set. Craven continued to put on her own theatricals and write for the theatre. In her old age, she moved to Naples where she passed her time sailing, gardening and writing her Memoirs. Even in her final years, scandal dogged her, and Craven made her feminist principles and criticisms of the laws of marriage apparent through her involvement in the notorious divorce case of Queen Caroline.

Book Synopsis Gender, Taste, and Material Culture in Britain and North America, 1700-1830 by : John Styles
Download or read book Gender, Taste, and Material Culture in Britain and North America, 1700-1830 written by John Styles and published by Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. This book was released on 2006 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1700 and 1830, men and women in the English-speaking territories framing the Atlantic gained unprecedented access to material things. The British Atlantic was an empire of goods, held together not just by political authority and a common language, but by a shared material culture nourished by constant flows of commodities. Diets expanded to include exotic luxuries such as tea and sugar, the fruits of mercantile and colonial expansion. Homes were furnished with novel goods, like clocks and earthenware teapots, the products of British industrial ingenuity. This groundbreaking book compares these developments in Britain and North America, bringing together a multi-disciplinary group of scholars to consider basic questions about women, men, and objects in these regions. In asking who did the shopping, how things were used, and why they became the subject of political dispute, the essays show the profound significance of everyday objects in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.

Book Synopsis The Chartist General by : Edward Beasley
Download or read book The Chartist General written by Edward Beasley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Charles James Napier was sent to confront the tens of thousands of Chartist protestors marching through the cities of the North of England in the late 1830s. A well-known leftist who agreed with the Chartist demands for democracy, Napier managed to keep the peace. In South Asia, the same man would later provoke a war and conquer Sind. In this first-ever scholarly biography of Napier, Edward Beasley asks how the conventional depictions of the man as a peacemaker in England and a warmonger in Asia can be reconciled. Employing deep archival research and close readings of Napier's published books (ignored by prior scholars), this well-written volume demonstrates that Napier was a liberal imperialist who believed that if freedom was right for the people of England it was right for the people of Sind -- even if "freedom" had to be imposed by military force. Napier also confronted the messy aftermath of Western conquest, carrying out nation-building with mixed success, trying to end the honour killing of women, and eventually discovering the limits of imperial interference.
