Book excerpt: A nonfiction collection of letters sent "home" by those traveling west. This collection of letters were sent from Wyoming by those coming west. The adventurous writers sent home bits and pieces of news about marriages, new vocations, deaths, murders, births, fights, shootings, politics, prices for commodities and more. These correspondents, cowboys and other citizens writing these letters provide a great historical record of the settlement of Wyoming and the American west in the decade of the 1870s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Wyoming: To the People of the United States, on the Presidential Election, and in Favour of Andrew Jackson At the formation of our government, the best and happiest the world has ever seen, no controversy existed as to who should preside over the destinies of the nation. One flushed with success, and at the head of a victorious army, was call ed to take charge of the government. He was a military man, and the nation, so far from apprehending a capacity or disposition on his part, to subvert the liberty he had ao quired for his country, confided with one voice her destinies tothis hands. Then was it not an inquiry, who could write a paragraph with the greatest classical purity; or who, the most finished veteran at intrigue the question was, who is he, that, fearless of consequences, and regardless of dan ger, has breasted the storm in the hour of peril, and risked himselffor the country. There was a virtue with the Ame rican people then, which would have bade them spurn from their confidence, that man, who, by any effort, however dis guised, could have manifested a wish to elevate himself to the Presidential chair. Book excerpt: An authentic voice from the western frontier Elinore Pruitt Stewart is renowned for her books 'Letters of a Woman Homesteader' and its sequel 'Letters on an Elk Hunt, ' both of which are included in this Leonaur good value, two-in-one edition. Born in 1876 in the Oklahoma Indian Territory, the oldest of nine children, by the time she was 30 years old she had married Harry Rupert and was the widowed mother of a baby daughter. Three years later Elinore answered an advertisement for a housekeeper for rancher Henry Stewart at Burntfork, Wyoming. She filed a claim on 160 acres of land adjacent to Stewart's property and the couple were married soon afterwards. Elinore's life as the couple struggled to run their ranch and raise their family on the Wyoming prairie, was a harsh one, but her books show it be a life full of encounters with notable and memorable characters and rich in variety and experience. She has left us a rewarding, charming and poignant insight into the lives of American settlers who carved a living and a nation out of the western states. Her story epitomises the spirit of the pioneer women who tamed a wilderness and will resonate with everyone who enjoys reading about the lives of those determined to triumph over adversity. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wyoming: In a Series of Letters, From Charles Miner, to His Son William Penn Miner, Esq. The History of Wyoming remains to be written. The book of Mr. Chapman is certainly valuable, so far as it extends. A man of talents, research and industry - had his life been prolonged, he would have produced a work worthy of the subject, and his own fame. Cut off in mid-life, his manuscript was the first rude essay - the mere out line of what he must have intended to accomplish. The eagerness with which the volume was sought after and read, shows the lively interest which the public mind possesses in respect to the subject. Col. Stone's popular book, The Poetry and History of 'vyoming, deserves commendation. His polished pen has thrown a charm around the narrative, easier to admire than imitate. But the fact that he was obliged to reprint Campbell's Gertrude, with Irving's Biography of the Author, shows that, in his view, the materials of interest relating to the subject were either too few, or too remotely accessible, to form the ground-work for a respectable volume. Most of the more striking facts, and many of the more touching personal incidents, he has wrought up with a master hand, and given with all the sparkling raciness which genius imparts to an interesting subject.
