Book excerpt: Writing this particular book has been an unusual experience from which I can appreciate the passion and emotional oscillations involved when Count Leo Nikolaievich Tolstoy wrote his epic War and Peace (1875-78). Although obviously not present during the events taking place in the Crimea, which Tolstoy was on occasion, yet through letters written by a young lieutenant to his family near Macclesfield, the sights, sounds and feelings expressed have enabled a significant part of the young man's story to be written. The second story of a young doctor from Macclesfield, a contemporary of the lieutenant, who again write in-depth letters home during his service in India and Egypt, is full of interesting detail which initially suggests reminiscences of a tourist's holiday. It lures us into a false sense of security for the horrifying events that were to follow. Whilst war and battles encompass death, gloom and destruction, yet there are the lighter fascinating interludes, so important to balance the story and bring to life the characters of those involved, and also their comrades and friends. I sincerely hope that these stories will encourage an appreciation of the service given by these two young men. who did not hesitate to serve their nation in its time of need. Their resilience in adversity and their dedication to duty was second to none, and, although quite different in character, both were psychologically suited for the war zone in which each served.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From India and the Crimea The memoir of your late dear husband's life will not only be much prized by his many friends, bring ing back many recollections of the past, but I feel sure it will be interesting reading to many who had not the privilege of his acquaintance, as he was not only clever, but a cheery, pleasant companion, and a great favourite of all with whom he came in contact. Above all, he was very fond of his profession, and availed himself of any opportunity that offered to note what was taking place around him. He was an honour to his profession in every sense of the word. We were all very sorry when he left. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1854 Britain and France were at war to save 'poor little Turkey', the crumbling Ottoman Empire, from the menace of Russian expansionism. On 25 October they were nine days into what would become an eleven-month siege, with little to show for it. Suddenly, from behind them came the unmistakeable sound of cannon. The Russians had arrived. Vastly outnumbered, the British gained an unlikely upper hand with the charge of the Heavy Brigade and the efforts of the Thin Red Line. But then, within two hours of achieving near victory, the British squandered it in dramatic style with the charge of the Light Brigade. Using eyewitness accounts, letters and diaries, acclaimed military historian Robert Kershaw presents a new, intimate look at the Battle of Balaclava, from the perspective of the men who 'saw little and knew even less'. Come down from the Heights and see the real story of one of the most ill-fated military expeditions in British history.
