Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Italy The accompanying Letters were not originally written with the intention of being published in a book, and very probably would have been worse written if they had been. In passing through Italy, one is constantly subjected to sudden and great transitions of feeling. The classic land and the home of the Caesars, have so long been a portion of the scholar's dreams, and so brightly colored with his own feelings, that the very matter-of-fact objects that stare him in the face, when he is expecting some hallowed monument of the past, will of ten quite upset his gravity, and compel him to laugh, where he thought to have been serious and reflective. It has been my effort in these Letters to give a faithful transcript of my feelings, in all these sudden transitions. To some there may often appear too much lightness and frivolity. For ourselves, we like to have a man give himself in his travels - we wish to hear him soliloquizing - and we read his book not to learn that he can be, or is, a very serious and profound man, but to know, how things struck him - that is, travel with. Him. Amid the new and exciting scenes that constantly meet trav ellers, in perhaps a hurried passage over a country, they can not, and do not, have the views and feelings so often given, for appearance' sake, as their honest ones. Our purpose has been to let others, if possible, look through our eyes; and whether we have succeeded or not, or whether they would have obtained a very interesting view if they did, we leave the reader to judge. Descriptions of galleries of art, paintings, etc. Have been avoided, as possessing interest to those only who have travelled over the same ground, and become familiar with the details necessary to make those descriptions clear. We have attempted, also, to give some idea of the condition of the inhabitants, especially of the lower classes, as they are topics seldom referred to in passing over the most classic land on the globe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From France and Italy The establishment and continuance of peace between Great Britain and the Continental nations, has opened an intercourse so free between their respective people, that the customs and curiosities of France and Italy are almost as familiar to our minds, as the customs and curiosities of our native land. Thither the Artist hastens for the cultivation of his taste, or the examination of those models, which the superior skill of by-gone ages has bequeathed to their posterity. Thither the Antiquarian bends his steps, that he may sit with admiring contemplation, beside the vestiges of antiquity. Thither the Naturalist wanders to explore that loveliness which Nature unfolds beneath a softer sky, and more genial climate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wartime Letters From Italy A tenor of the Boston Opera Company felt the same way; here at sea, hundreds of miles from Italy, the shadow of war projected itself. The Americans and the English said: N 0, Italy will not fight. Every day Austria will make more concessions and Italy will get what she wants without war - even the provinces which were stolen from her many years ago. But the tenor, lusty and of fighting age, knew otherwise. The young stewards, the boys who fill wine-bottles, the sailors on the decks and the men deep down in the hold - they could see the mailed fist with the clutching fingers reaching out for their youth, their vitality and happiness, for their lives. Yesterday their Latin gayety was stilled, their voices low, their eyes sad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nous sommes legers, voila tout! Was Madame de Stael's concession and defence in behalf of her fellow - citizens, and a hundred times I have made to myself the same apology (though in a somewhat different sense) for this happy race: whom it is impossible not to felicitate on their cheerful temperament, their frank and genial sociability, their natural cour tesy and kindliness; nor, on the other hand, to take to task for their immoderate love of pleasure Viennese existence may be defined, at least through the season, to be life drawn out into a recurring series of dances. In other lands the dance is the bye-play of life, and subordinate to its more earnest purposes: but in a Viennese winter it is one of the prime. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Italy, Switzerland and Germany Our little friend Barron, six years of age, delights to hear about my beautiful trip to Europe, but he invariably closes our tete-a-tete saying, emphatically and defiantly, "But there's nothing in Europe as good as America." I commend his patriotism, yet am pleased that more than once he has asked his mother to carry him to Europe "to see St. Peter's, the Sea of Ice, and that big St. Bernard dog." It is with the hope of giving pleasure to many young friends, also those of larger growth, that this little volume is published. I would that it might even strengthen the desire of some people unto determination to see the invaluable art-treasures and to enjoy the charming scenery of Europe, enhanced by association with the heroic deeds and beautiful romances of many centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in Italy: Letters From the Apennines I Feel that I owe the reader some explanation for having presented my subject in so incomplete and unsystematic a way. Now that its pages are in the inexorable hands of the printer, many other aspects of "home life" than those I have chosen confront me, and seem to resent my neglect. But this book did not originally spring from any desire to offer information. In the first joy of finding myself in an out-of-the-way corner of Italy, where the social conditions of the place enabled me to make real friends among the people, I put on paper my impressions of the little world around me, describing what appealed personally to me, what seemed interesting or amusing and likely to convey to my English friends the sense I felt of remoteness from our trafficking century. This method obliged me to leave out many things, and content myself with the mere suggestion of others. Those who have travelled the length and breadth of Italy, and know how far asunder, in thought and aspiration, the South is from the North, will realise the impossibility of giving an account of Italian social life that shall either be complete or true of all pa of the country equally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Italy to a Younger Sister Italy has been the theme of so many able and distinguished writers - its history, literature, antiquities, and treasures of art, all that the truth or romance of past and present times can supply, have been so often presented to the public, both in poetry and prose, that the present work may seem an unnecessary, if not a presumptuous undertaking, and many will ask, "Can anything new be said of Italy?" I at once confess that in writing, my object has not been novelty, but utility; for amongst the various Works on Italy that have fallen in my way, I have not found one which brings this country, with all its interesting associations, within the reach of young people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Italy: Illustrated by Engravings In consequence of the necessity of performing quarantine we were not allowed time to examine the interior of Otranto we were therefore not able to judge of its riches and its po'pul lation, which is said to amount to 3000 souls. The quay was covered with merchandizes, and the number of ships which frequented the port made us conclude that commerce was in 31 flourishing state: the city also appeared busy and 'active. In the evening we perceived on the beach some equipages more rich than elegant, and some gentlemen on horseback 'well mounted. The pretty peasant girls wore bodices of taffeta and skirts of white muslin, and their heads were covered with straw hats or silk handkerchiefs. Until the night was far adé' vanced the air resounded with strains of music, and with melodious voices mingling with the sound of all' kinds of instruments.
