Nous sommes legers, voila tout! Was Madame de Stael's concession and defence in behalf of her fellow - citizens, and a hundred times I have made to myself the same apology (though in a somewhat different sense) for this happy race: whom it is impossible not to felicitate on their cheerful temperament, their frank and genial sociability, their natural cour tesy and kindliness; nor, on the other hand, to take to task for their immoderate love of pleasure Viennese existence may be defined, at least through the season, to be life drawn out into a recurring series of dances. In other lands the dance is the bye-play of life, and subordinate to its more earnest purposes: but in a Viennese winter it is one of the prime. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Italy The accompanying Letters were not originally written with the intention of being published in a book, and very probably would have been worse written if they had been. In passing through Italy, one is constantly subjected to sudden and great transitions of feeling. The classic land and the home of the Caesars, have so long been a portion of the scholar's dreams, and so brightly colored with his own feelings, that the very matter-of-fact objects that stare him in the face, when he is expecting some hallowed monument of the past, will of ten quite upset his gravity, and compel him to laugh, where he thought to have been serious and reflective. It has been my effort in these Letters to give a faithful transcript of my feelings, in all these sudden transitions. To some there may often appear too much lightness and frivolity. For ourselves, we like to have a man give himself in his travels - we wish to hear him soliloquizing - and we read his book not to learn that he can be, or is, a very serious and profound man, but to know, how things struck him - that is, travel with. Him. Amid the new and exciting scenes that constantly meet trav ellers, in perhaps a hurried passage over a country, they can not, and do not, have the views and feelings so often given, for appearance' sake, as their honest ones. Our purpose has been to let others, if possible, look through our eyes; and whether we have succeeded or not, or whether they would have obtained a very interesting view if they did, we leave the reader to judge. Descriptions of galleries of art, paintings, etc. Have been avoided, as possessing interest to those only who have travelled over the same ground, and become familiar with the details necessary to make those descriptions clear. We have attempted, also, to give some idea of the condition of the inhabitants, especially of the lower classes, as they are topics seldom referred to in passing over the most classic land on the globe. The Venetian is the language generally spoken here, and indeed in all the considerable towns of this state, except a few, such as Brescia and Bergamo, which have a dialect of their own. Of such towns it may be observed, that they were not comprehended in the tract of country inhabited by the ancient Veneti, but settled by the Cisalpine Gauls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Years: The Letters of an Idle Man What a world they open Travel is the natural material of letters it brightens the mind, there is novelty in the scene, and human life runs its whole gamut of interest. My friend is an old traveller, and his memory goes far back, and visits many lands, - more than are told of in this last quarter-century of his letters; but here there are interludes of California and Japan and India, he ranges to Vienna, Copenhagen, and England, glances at Paris and tours Spain; the home-country of the letters, however, is the Germany of Dresden, in the earlier portion, and, in the later, the wonderful Medi terranean crescent that reaches from the Azure Coast to Naples and is backed by Northern Italy, the Swiss Alps and the Tyrol. It is no part of my plan to open the letters or discuss them; but I will express my delight in the vignettes of nature on the pages, singular in the power of brief descriptive strokes to give space, picturesqueness, sharp detail. The habitual and spontaneous response of the writer to nature, to her freshness and simplicity, to atmosphere as a physical thing, climate, and the real joys of country-life is one Of the traits of the book, which is rich in temperament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Rome to Friends in England IN strictness, these were not Letters from Rome. A traveller who resides but a short time in that wondrous city, has no leisure to prepare Letters for the press. Scarcely is he able to jot down, with punctuality, the impressions of the passing hour; especially if, to every other claim on his time, are superadded the duties, let me rather say, the privileges) - of a Chaplain. The title of the present volume, nevertheless, sufiiciently describes its general cha motor. Its miscellaneous contents must be ascertained from an inspection of the headings of its chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Haydn, in a Series of Letters Written at Vienna: Followed by the Life of Mozart, With Observations on Metastasio, and on the Present State of Music in France and Italy As explanatory of the origin and publi cation of the book, the author says, in his preface, I was at Vienna in 1808, whence I wrote to a friend some letters respecting the celebrated Haydn, whose acquaintance an accidental occurrence had fortunately procured for me, eight or ten years before. On my return to Paris, I found that my let ters had acquired some celebrity; and that pains had been taken to obtain copies of them. I am thus tempted to become an author, and fairly to show myself in print. I accordingly add a few illustrations, I re move some repetitions, and present myself to the friends of music, in the form of an octavo. How wretched must any work of man look in the midst of this great and glorious Nature, but espe cially such sorry, poverty-stricken works as these black and dirty little towns, such mean heaps of stones and rubbish! Large rubble and other stones on the roofs, too, that the miserable thatch may not be carried off from the top of them; and then the filth, the dung, and the gaping idiots! When here you meet with man and the wretched work of his hands, you are glad to run away immediately from both. That there are in man very many intellectual capaci ties which in this life he is unable to develop, which, therefore, point to a better future and to a more har monious state of existence, on this point we are both agreed. But, further than this, I cannot give up that other fancy of mine, even though, on account of it, you may again call me, as you have so often done already, a mere enthusiast. For my part, I do think that man feels conscious, also, of corporeal qualities of whose mature expansion he can have no hope in this life. This, most assuredly, is the case with flying. How strongly, at one time, used the clouds, as they drove along the blue sky, to tempt me to travel with them to foreign lands! And now in what danger do I stand, lest they should carry me away with them from the mountain-peak as they sweep violently by! What desire I feel to throw myself into the boundless regions of the air, to poise over the terrific abyss, or to alight on some otherwise inaccessible rock! With what a longing do I draw deeper and deeper breath, when, in the dark blue depth below me, the eagle soars over rocks and forests, or, in company and in sweet concord with his mate, wheels in wide circles round the eyry to which he has entrusted his young! Must I, then, never do more than creep up to the summits 7 Must I always go on clinging to the highest rocks, as well as to the lowest plain? And when I have at last, with much toil, reached the desired eminence, must I still anxiously grasp at every holding-place, shudder at the thought of return, and tremble at the chance of a fall? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Letters: With An English Translation Compared with his Confessions, St. Augustine's Letters have received but slight attention, even from many of his professed biographers, and for each edition of the one there have appeared, at a moderate estimate, several hundred editions, translations or studies of the other. Yet a man's autobiography gives only his own account and interpretation of him self and his deeds his letters, if they are genuine and spontaneous, show him directly, without the distor tion of his own explanations and self-justifications. The present selection, barely a quarter of Augustine's extant correspondence, contains, it is hoped, enough to exhibit the human interest of the man and his environment excluding almost all the lengthier letters, often of the bulk of minor treatises, and those solely or chiefly concerned with questions of doctrine, I have sought to present those which best reveal him in contact with the varied and busy life of his time.
