Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Graysons: A Story of Illinois I had thought to close up the cycle of my stories of life in the Mississippi Valley with Roxy, which was published in 1878. But when I undertook by request of the alitor to write a short story for The Century Magazine, and to found it on a legendary account of one of President Lincoln's trials, the theme grew on my hands until the present novel was the result. It was written mostly at Nervi, near Genoa, where I could not by any possibility have verified the story I had received about 1867 from one of Lincoln's old neighbors. To have investigated the accuracy of my version of the anec dote would have been, indeed, to fly in the face and eyes of providence, for popular tradition is itself an artist rough hewing a story to the novelist's hands. During the appear ance of this novel in serial form I have received many letters from persons acquainted in one way or another with the actors and sufferers in the events, of which these here related are the ideal counterparts. Some of these letters contain in formation or relate incidents of so much interest that I have it in mind to insert them in an appendix to some later edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library In letters and documents of the war years, Lincoln's humanity shines from the drab horror of the conflict. A poor widow, by the name of Baird, he informed Stanton on March 1, 1864, has a son in the army, that for some offence has been sentenced to serve a long time without pay or at most, with very little pay. I do not like this punishment of withholding pay - it falls so very hard upon poor families. Whereupon he ordered that the soldier be allowed to re-enlist on the usual terms. Again, on March 15, 1864, he wrote to Stanton asking him to see the gallant Drummer-boy, Robert H. Hendershot, whose history is briefly written on the fine drum presented him which he now carries. He must have a chance, and if you can find any situation suitable to him, I shall be obliged. Perhaps the most revealing item in the entire collection, however, is a Small pass, dated April 9, 1864, permitting John Ehler, a boy 10 years old, to join a certain soldier in the 6lst New York Infantry in the Army of the Potomac. On the back are these words, written two days later: They say that by the destruction of a bridge this boy has been unable to pass on this. Might it not be renewed for the little fel low? A. Lincoln. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's History of Illinois The richest heritage which shall ever come into our possession is the simple story of the struggles, the sacrifices, and the triumphs of the men and women - our fore-parents - who planted in this western wilderness the home, the school, the church, and the State. We shall never know that story in all its fullness and completeness. For the noble men and women who opened up the way for civilization in all this western country, have long since gone to their reward, and they have left meager accounts of all the vicissitudes through which they passed when "wilderness was king." We may never realize, fully, what it meant for the men and women of a century or more ago to leave comfortable homes, devoted friends and relatives, the associations of childhood, aye, the graves of their dead, and take up their weary march over mountains, across streams, through trackless forests, to plant new homes in a wilderness inhabited by wild beasts and wilder men. It is the purpose of this little volume to reveal a portion of that story to our people, and especially to the boys and girls while they are yet free from the cares of the graver responsibilities of life. If these young people shall ever come into possession of their inheritance, we may not fear for the future of our homes nor for the destiny of the State. The tendency of those who gather up the history of a state or of a nation is to put much stress upon the political movements and greatly to neglect the other phases of a people's life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Lee County, Being Some Chapters in the History, of the Early Days in Lee County, Illinois This is not an effort to write a history of any man or any locality. The sole purpose of the work is the collection and preservation of the scarce and almost inaccessible evidence of some of the men and events prominent in the early days of Lee County. It was not prepared to sustain any theory or tradition, but every effort within my power has been made to learn all the facts concerning these men and events and state them correctly. Some old traditions have been shattered, but they were not sustained by the facts, and many of them had no foundation except the loose talk of persons who were ignorant of the matters of which they spoke. Some of my old beliefs, held and cherished since early childhood, have been dispelled, but they were founded upon misinformation. Reference is made to some public record, report or document whenever one could be found. When such evidence could not be had, my resort was to newspapers, private letters or records or books written or published about that time, in the belief that such contemporaneous statements are more likely to be free from error than those made years afterwards. In some instances the private records and the public records differ, and the latter are followed, the entries being contemporaneous with the event. Every statement of fact is based on evidence of one of the kinds mentioned, though references have been omitted in some places. All Indian words appearing on John Dixon's account books are given in the form used there. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Illinois When Dr. Cutler arrived in New York he brought a large number of letters of introduction, most of them to southern members of congress. R. H. Lee of Virginia was the intimate friend of Dr. Cutler, and the latter went to the southern members. He presented his case intelligently and impartially, and thus won over to his cause their support. Ephraim Cutler in his life of Manasseh Cutler, his father, says that the latter, in 1804, in speaking of the slavery clause, said that he had prepared that part of the ordinance while he was in New York on behalf of the Ohio company; congress had done nothing material toward an ordinance until July 9, 1787, four days after Dr. Manasseh Cutler arrived in New York to negotiate a sale of lands for his company, and that directly upon his arrival he entered upon his work; that he labored with the members of congress, urging the justness of his company's claims and the pressing need of some law for the government of the territory; that be secured the appointment of a committee; that he appeared before that committee, a bill was prepared with his help, it was then submitted to him, with leave to make remarks and propose amendments, and that he did Ofier several amendments. Cutler's colleagues in the Ohio company were New Englanders, men of ability, in uence and high moral standing. Cutler himself, being a New England clergyman, was opposed to slavery and it is no more than could be expected, that, being interested himself, he would secure for his company not only a grant favorable to them as regarded location and price, but that he would so far as in his power encompass its government by salutary laws, which should embody New England principles. Cutler reported his conclusions to the committee and through his forceful presentation the committee reported favorably on the ordinance and it was adopted just eight days after he arrived in New York. It is safe to say Dr. Manasseh Cutler was the moving spirit to whom the credit for Article 6 of the ordinance is due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Bench and Bar of Illinois Some years ago when in social conversation with two gentlemen of the Bar, I was relating some professional inci dents which had occurred many years before, when one of them suggested that it would be interesting to the profes sion of the present day if I would note down. Events 'which had occurred in the early times and lay them before the public; I promised to do so, and the result was a: series of articles published in the Chicago Legal News. Upon their publication I received many letters from gentlemen of the Bar in various parts of the State, expressing the hope that the articles might be republished in. Book form. I finally revised these articles and prepared them for the press, with several new papers which have not been previously pub lished, and placed them in the hands of the printer, thinking that many incidents and some peculiarities of former times might be thus perpetuated, which may in still later times be considered worth remembering. I do this the more readily as I am probably the only man now living who can speak from personal observations and recollections of events of fifty years and more ago. In the Appendix I have given an address delivered before the State Bar Association on the 24th of January last, and another given before the Chicago Bar Association February 11, 1893, in which will be found some statements germane to the subject, not previously given.
