Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Rome to Friends in England IN strictness, these were not Letters from Rome. A traveller who resides but a short time in that wondrous city, has no leisure to prepare Letters for the press. Scarcely is he able to jot down, with punctuality, the impressions of the passing hour; especially if, to every other claim on his time, are superadded the duties, let me rather say, the privileges) - of a Chaplain. The title of the present volume, nevertheless, sufiiciently describes its general cha motor. Its miscellaneous contents must be ascertained from an inspection of the headings of its chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From England Falmouth stands on the western side of the bay, and consists of one long narrow street, which exhibits no favourable specimen either of the boasted cleanliness or wealth of the English towns. The wealthier merchants dwell a little out of the town upon the shore, or on the Opposite side of the bay, at a little place called Flushing. The harbour, which is very fine, is commanded by the castle of Pendennis; near its mouth there is a single rock, on which a pole is erected, because it is covered at high tide. A madman not many years ago carried his wife here at low water, landed her on the rock, and rowed away in sport; nor did he return till her danger, as well. As fear, had become extreme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From England, Vol. 1 of 2 The remarks of Foreign Travellers upon our own country have always been so Well re ceived by the public, that no apology can be necessary for offeling to it the present T rans lation. The author of this work seems to have enjoyed more advantages than most of his pre decessors, and to have availed himself of them with remarkable diligence. He boasts also of his impartiality: to this praise, in general, he is entitled; but there are some things which he has seen with a jaundiced eye. It is manifest, that he is bigoted to the deplorable supersti tions of his country; and we may well suppose that those parts of the work in which his bigo try is most apparent, have not been improved by the aid for which he thanks his Father Con fesser. The Translator has seldom thought it necessary to offer any comments upon the pal pable errors and mis-statements which this spi rit has sometimes occasioned: the few notes which he has annexed are distinguished by the letters Tn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Written From England: August 4 to November 4, 1914 Arthur Crosby Ludington was the son of Charles Henry and Josephine Noyes Ludington and was born in New York City on March 6th, 1880. His preparation for college was received at the Black Hall (Connecticut) School, and at St. Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire. After graduating with honors from Yale University, he was connected for nearly three years with a banking firm in New York City, and then went to Princeton as instructor in Political Science and assistant to President Woodrow Wilson. In the summer of 1907 he went to Germany and studied at Heidelberg University, and later took courses at Columbia. At this time he identified himself with political reform work in New York and gave especial attention to the betterment of election laws, helping to frame the direct nominations and Massachusetts ballot bills which are now laws of New York State. He served for several years as a member of the Legislative Committee of the Citizens' Union of New York City and was active in the National Short Ballot Association. Among other things, he made a compilation of the variations in the forms of the ballot, from the days of the "vest pocket" variety to the present Australian and composite forms. Before his last trip abroad, he was attached for a time to the Department of the Interior at Washington, writing a report on the Indian policy of the United States Government.
