Download or read book The Sesame Effect written by Charlotte F. Cole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sesame Effect details the wide-ranging work of Sesame Workshop and its productions across the world. With an emphasis on impact and evidence from research on projects in low- and middle-income countries, the book tells the stories behind the development of an international family of Muppet characters created for the locally produced adaptations of Sesame Street. Each chapter highlights the educational message of international co-productions and presents the cultural context of each project. Readers will understand the specific needs of children living in a given locale, as well as gain insight into the educational drivers of each project. These projects often deal with difficult issues, from race relations in the United States, to HIV/AIDS education in South Africa, to building respect across cultural divides in the Middle East. Readers will see how local productions have helped build a new mindset that values the importance of early childhood education, and how Sesame Street promotes a brighter future by building children’s academic skills, encouraging healthy habits, and by fostering attitudes that counter negative stereotypes and create appreciation of and respect for others. The Sesame Effect shows how, when magnified across the millions of children touched by the various international programs, Sesame Workshop and its projects are making a difference around the world.

Download or read book Bangladesh written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangladesh’s robust economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic was interrupted by Russia’s war in Ukraine. Rising global commodity prices, supply disruptions, and slowdown in external demand have led to a sharp widening of the current account deficit, depreciation of the Taka, and the rapid decline of foreign exchange reserves. The resulting high inflation, slow growth, and stringent measures to compress demand are disproportionately impacting the poor. Heightened global uncertainties will keep the balance of payments (BoP) under pressure for some time.

Book Synopsis Rediscovering Muhammad Yunus by : Mohammad Jabbar
Download or read book Rediscovering Muhammad Yunus written by Mohammad Jabbar and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus made history by bringing the Nobel Peace Prize home to the micro-finance institution he had pioneered, the Grameen Bank, based on the idea that micro-credit model was such a meaningful tool for poverty alleviation that it could contribute to true and lasting peace., This win would swiftly become mired in controversy. Yunus would go on to try and fail to enter electoral politics. He resigned from the position of the managing director of the bank amid controversy about the legality of holding that position for a decade beyond official retirement age and about the mode of creation and management of dozens of grameen affiliated enterprises. In a tight, thorough investigation, Rediscovering Muhammad Yunus takes a look at its eponymous figure and institution, detailing how Yunus came to found the Grameen Bank, win the Nobel Prize, and eventually find himself plagued by controversy. Author Mohammad Jabbar details the contending version of events, thoughtfully drawing out the fallacies of Yunus’s positions to reveal a much more complex, opaque story of what led to his departure from the bank—and the questions that have dogged him and his brainchild since. Whether or not they are familiar with Yunus’s story, this book is sure to interest those looking to enrich their understanding of development and economics—particularly as they relate to micro-finance and Bangladesh. It will make an excellent addition to the bookshelves of anyone interested in the shady underside of philanthropy, capitalist solutions to poverty, and the “development” of the so-called developing world.
