Book excerpt: While the letters exchanged between the man who was to become King Edward VIII/ Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson/ Duchess of Windsor have been preserved and published, it had long been thought that many of the Prince of Wales' letters to his earlier mistress, Mrs Freda Dudley Ward, had been destroyed by her some time before her death. But in November 1996, editor Rupert Godfrey came across by chance while holidaying abroad: 262 letters, dating from 1918 to 1921, over 100 photographs and assorted cards and memorabilia. They covered the last year of the First World War and the Prince's official tours of Canada, New Zealand and Australia, when he was in his early twenties. Revealing and touching, the letters will alter our perception of the man born to give up the throne for the woman he later came to love.

Book excerpt: In 1996 a cache of 263 letters, previously thought lost, was discovered - the first of a total of over 2000 written by Edward, then Prince of Wales, during his sixteen-year relationship with Freda Dudley Ward, the estranged wife of a Liberal MP, who came to dominate his life in the years after the Great War. Dating from just days after their first meeting, during an air raid in London in February 1918, until January 1921, these letters give remarkable new insights into Edward's character, providing the reader with a greater understanding of how this fascinating figure could later give up his throne for love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary 1964 Broadway run of Hamlet directed by John Gielgud is one of the most famous productions of Shakespeare’s most important play. Audacious for its time in concept and execution, it placed the actors in everyday clothes within an unassuming “rehearsal” set, with the Ghost of Hamlet’s father projected as a shadow against the rear wall and voiced by the director himself. It was also a runaway critical and financial success, breaking the then-record for most performances of a Broadway show. This was in no small part due to the starring role played by Richard Burton, whose romance with Elizabeth Taylor was the object of widespread fascination. Present throughout, and ever attentive to the backstage drama and towering egos on display, was the actor William Redfield, who played Guildenstern. During the three months of the play’s preparation, from rehearsals through out-of-town tryouts to the gala opening night on Broadway, Redfield wrote a series of letters describing the daily happenings and his impressions of them. In 1967, they were in 1967 collected into Letters from an Actor, a brilliant and unusual book that has since become a classic behind-the-scenes account that remains an indispensable contribution to theatrical history and lore. This new edition at last brings Redfield’s classic back into print, as The Motive and the Cue—the Sam Mendes-directed play about the Gielgud production that is based in part on the book—continues its successful run in London’s West End.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfieri's second treatise, The Prince and Letters, is as timely today as when first published in 1788. Vehemently rejecting Voltaire's contention that the greatest periods of literature and art are all associated with the name of some reigning patron, such as Augustus or Louis XIV, he maintains that only in perfect freedom can supreme poetry be born. His fundamental principles still apply, for the relation between the writer and the state has become increasingly complex. This is the first version in english. The translation keeps close to the original text, but renders it in smooth, clear English. The scholarship is of the highest quality, showing an intimate knowledge of Alfieri's life and of the political trends and culture currents of his age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letter to a Hostage is a book by the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Saint-Exupéry initially wrote this piece as a preface for his best friend, Léon Werth’s novel: Trente-trois jours (Thirty Three Days). Werth had been forced to take refuge in the Jura region of France during the autumn of 1940 because of his Jewish origins. His book, however, could not be published, and so the author significantly revised his preface, removing any direct references to his friend and making him anonymous within the text and a symbol for France as the hostage of the occupying forces. This version was published independently in June 1943. The work is comprised of six short chapters which reflect upon recent aspects of the author’s life (travelling to Portugal, impressions of the Sahara, living in the USA...), and combines references to his friendship with Werth and to his love for his country.
