Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Late Eminent Prelate to One of His Friends First American: Edition Rev. Sir, I Received the favour of your edition of Horace's Art of Poetry: for which I beg leave to make my best acknowledgments. You have given very little advantage to the critics, but where you speak of me: and yet my self-love will not suffer me to wish it unsaid, when I consider how much real honour is done to every one whom such an author commends. I tell you, with all sincerity, I think the Notes one of the most masterly pieces of criticism that ever was written. I am sure (and I ought to be ashamed to say it) that I should have envied you for it, had I not found you so generous to the Commentator of Mr. Pope. As it is, I take a pride in it as my own; a greater than I can take in any of my own. I wish it was in my power to make a suitable acknowledgment for my obligations. The best thing I have to offer you is a very unprofitable friendship. Such as it is, you have a right to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Late Eminent Prelate to One of His Friends What you divine of the new edition of the Para-l dise-lost, just now upon the point of appearing, may perhaps prove too true. I agree with you, the editor prejudiced nobody in his favour by his specimen. He was all-advised to give such a one. I have indeed, as you say, raised a spirit without designing it. And while I thought I was only conjecturing, it seems I was conjuring. So that I had no sooner evoked the name of Shake spear from the rotten monument of his former editions, than a crew of Strange devils, and more grotesque than any of those he laughs at in the old faroes, came chattering, mewing, and grinning round about me. The Oxford man you mention, who writ some thing about Shakespear, and would write about Jonson, is a pert dunce, the most troublesome sort of vermin in all Parnassus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model edition of the early correspondence of one of George III's favourite bishops. ARCHIVES Richard Hurd is best known to ecclesiastical historians as one of George III's favourite bishops who was offered, and declined, the archbishopric of Canterbury. These letters, therefore, illuminate the early career of one of the most prominent clerics of the late eighteenth century. The letters begin in 1739, just after Hurd had graduated B.A. at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. They chart his gradual climb up the ladder of ecclesiastical preferment, through his time as Fellow at Emmanuel and end with him settled in the comfortable country rectory of Thurcaston in Leicestershire. Hurd had a wide circle of correspondents. He became a close friend of William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester, perhaps the most prominent controverialist of the period. He was also a member of a literary circle which included the poets Thomas Gray and William Mason. Indeed, Hurd himself is well-known to students of English literatureas the author of Letters on Chivalry and Romanceand as a significant figure among the so-called `pre-romantics'. Hurd's letters reveal the full range of his interests, from theology and university politics, through literature, to painting and sculpture. This edition, therefore, not only tells us about Hurd's early life and career, but also provides a valuable insight into the social life of the Anglican clergy in the eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: First published in 2006. The reform of the Church of England in the first half of the nineteenth century was moulded considerably by the same pressures of industrialization, urbanization, and population growth that rapidly altered English society adn its institutions as a whole. The present work examines the responses of the episcopal leadership of the Church of England and Wales to the transformation of teh soceity to which they ministered. It considers primarily their social ideas and policies from teh decade preceding the French Revolution to the middle of the nineteenth century: from the period when a few bishops began to worry abotu the effectiveness of their abuse-ridden Church to the time when teh established Church, ecclesiastically reformed and spiritually revitalized, looked forward to evangelizing the multitudes who peopled the new age. The study concentrates on the attitudes and policies of those prelates installed in the years before 1783, between 1783 and 1812, between 1812 and 1830, and finally between 1830 and 1852. Professor Soloway also examines their social connections, showing the predominantly aristocratic nature of the Church's leadership in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He emphasises the importance of the role of these men in guiding, administering and reforming the established Church in a period of unprecedented economic and social change.

Book excerpt: Reading 1759 investigates the literary culture of a remarkable year in British and French history, writing, and ideas. Familiar to many as the British "year of victories" during the Seven Years' War, 1759 was also an important year in the histories of fiction, philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics. Reading 1759 is the first book to examine together the range of works written and published during this crucial year. Offering broad coverage of the year's work in writing, these essays examine key works by Johnson, Voltaire, Sterne, Adam Smith, Edward Young, Sarah Fielding, and Christopher Smart, along with such group projects as the Encyclop die and the literary review journals of the mid-eighteenth century. Organized around a cluster of key topics, the volume reflects the concerns most important to writers themselves in 1759. This was a year of the new and the modern, as writers addressed current issues of empire and ethical conduct, forged new forms of creative expression, and grappled with the nature of originality itself. Texts written and published in 1759 confronted the history of Western colonialism, the problem of prostitution in a civilized society, and the limitations of linguistic expression. Philosophical issues were also important in 1759, not least the thorny question of causation; while, in France, state censorship challenged the Encyclop die, the central Enlightenment project. Taking into its purview such texts and intellectual developments, Reading 1759 puts the literary culture of this singular, and singularly important, year on the scholarly map. In the process, the volume also provides a self-reflective contribution to the growing body of "annualized" studies that focus on the literary output of specific years.
