Travel through the alphabet with The Other Bugs to learn about the many beautiful and unusually named bugs found in nature—and brush up on those ABCs as well! Valerie Gates’s charming alliterative style paired with Ann Cutting’s stunning photographs of all types of bugs is sure to delight curious children and adults alike. Spectacular photographs of insects of all kinds will inspire children to learn more about the different creatures found in the natural world. And while children learn about bugs, they are also learning the alphabet through silly sentences. This is an ideal gift for new parents and for young nature-loving children! Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: Junes story begins on a tiny farm in a sleepy little railroad town, buried in the depths of rural America. Dont look too closely at the sagging porches and the chipping paint. Through Junes eyes, its a place where nothing is as it seems, a place full of secrets. June lives with people who claim to be her family; shes not sure. Pieces are missing. Words and actions are out of sync. They cause so much pain and suffering. Can she be related to these people who say they are her family? These people they make her do things, things that arent talked about. Lying back very still, very quiet, June begins to feel the pull of the water, the twisting, the turning, finding herself in a puddle in the center of a meadow filled with wildflowers of all colors. On the path up ahead, she senses movement. Within seconds, a magnificent black panther stands before her. Tigua becomes her guardian and protector and helps her discover the power she has available. The power buried deep inside. Tigua gives her the strength to take back her body, take back her life. In this other world, she discovers the real meaning of family and the responsibility it holds. The Great Seer gives her the perspective of a warrior, equipping her with the wisdom and courage to fight the battle that threatens to consume her life. With the help of her guides, she learns what love is, and armed with that love she throws open the doors to all of their secrets, freeing those who came before and those who come after.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One month after her novel Gone With the Wind was published, Margaret Mitchell sold the movie rights for fifty thousand dollars. Fearful of what the studio might do to her story—“I wouldn’t put it beyond Hollywood to have . . . Scarlett seduce General Sherman,” she joked—the author washed her hands of involvement with the film. However, driven by a maternal interest in her literary firstborn and compelled by her Southern manners to answer every fan letter she received, Mitchell was unable to stay aloof for long. In this collection of her letters about the 1939 motion picture classic, readers have a front-row seat as the author watches the Dream Factory at work, learning the ins and outs of filmmaking and discovering the peculiarities of a movie-crazed public. Her ability to weave a story, so evident in Gone With the Wind, makes for delightful reading in her correspondence with a who’s who of Hollywood, from producer David O. Selznick, director George Cukor, and screenwriter Sidney Howard, to cast members Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland and Hattie McDaniel. Mitchell also wrote to thousands of others—aspiring actresses eager to play Scarlett O’Hara; fellow Southerners hopeful of seeing their homes or their grandmother’s dress used in the film; rabid movie fans determined that their favorite star be cast; and creators of songs, dolls and Scarlett panties who were convinced the author was their ticket to fame and fortune. During the film’s production, she corrected erring journalists and the producer’s over-the-top publicist who fed the gossip mills, accuracy be damned. Once the movie finished, she struggled to deal with friends and strangers alike who “fought and trampled little children and connived and broke the ties of lifelong friendship” to get tickets to the premiere. But through it all, she retained her sense of humor. Recounting an acquaintance’s denial of the rumor that the author herself was going to play Scarlett, Mitchell noted he “ungallantly stated that I was something like fifty years too old for the part.” After receiving numerous letters and phone calls from the studio about Belle Watling’s accent, the author related her father was “convulsed at the idea of someone telephoning from New York to discover how the madam of a Confederate bordello talked.” And in a chatty letter to Gable after the premiere, Mitchell coyly admitted being “feminine enough to be quite charmed” by his statement to the press that she was “fascinating,” but added: “Even my best friends look at me in a speculative way—probably wondering what they overlooked that your sharp eyes saw!” As Gone With the Wind marks its seventy-fifth anniversary on the silver screen, these letters, edited by Mitchell historian John Wiley, Jr., offer a fresh look at the most popular motion picture of all time through the eyes of the woman who gave birth to Scarlett.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Roseberry was 20 years old when he enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1942. Throughout his years in the army, beginning in Basic Training and continuing through his time in Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria, he wrote to his sister Margaret Roseberry Lawton who saved these letters for over 50 years. After his discharge, Charles Roseberry became active in the Disciples of Christ Church. With his letters are included his papers from this time. Rather than battle descriptions, what is found in the letters is the growth of a young man from a small southwest Virginia town away from home, in new countries with different customs, in the midst of war. His papers following the war reflect the continuing effect such an experience leaves on an individual.

Wilbur and Orville Wright have finally secured a contract with the United States government for the sale of their airplane. But they are not alone. Competitors, who are stealing their ideas, are popping up all over the U.S. and Europe. As they prepare for their demonstrations in America, a new contract in France creates an opportunity for the Wrights to cement their place in history. But if they want to pursue both contracts, they will need to split up and operate independently of one another for the first time. The letters in this book document the struggles of Wilbur, Orville, and the entire Wright family, as they navigate through one of the most difficult years of their lives, in which they face competition, isolation, physical injury and pressure from the ever-curious public eye.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about four high school teenagers who are called misfits, left-outs, and losers by their peers because of their defiant behavior toward teachers and administrators at their high school. The first teen, a native American, is a drug user whose father is a drug addict and petty thief. The second teen, who is Jewish, has been in and out of the detention center for a series of house burglaries. His father is unemployed, and his mother died from AIDS. The third teen, a Puerto Rican, drinks alcohol and hangs out all night in the streets, worrying his mother who is on the brink of a nervous breakdown. The fourth teen is an African American who bullies students after school. He would often shake them down for money or physically assault them for no reason. Both of his parents are doing time in prison, and he is living with his grandmother. These four teens were the most likely to fail in life. They were disrespectful and belligerent. Nevertheless, the stage was set to move them to another type of educational environment—one that would hold them accountable in strict fashion, or else, the next move could have them sent away to the state reformatory for boys. This new educational environment for them would be an alternative school that would force them to plot a journey toward changing their attitude and behavior to be productive human beings, despite coming from a life of despair, stemming from a broken home. They have acknowledged that they are waist-deep in mud and need to be rescued, so therefore, they make a pact among themselves to succeed in life, to build and make an indelible work. The questions are, How do they do it? What is their plan to be rescued from the mud? Time will tell.
