This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes bring to a close the only comprehensive edition of the surviving correspondence of William Morris (1834-1896), a protean figure who exerted a major influence as poet, craftsman, master printer, and designer. Volumes III and IV, taken together, give in detail the comments and observations that articulate his problematic political and artistic stands and equally problematic position within the aesthetic movement as it developed in the 1890s. Most eloquently voiced also are the complexities of his troubled marriage and his devotion to his epileptic daughter, Jenny, and his other daughter, May. But dominating all these themes, organizing and structuring them, are the Kelmscott Press and the building of Morris's important library of medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The letters record the way in which the Press becomes not only the center of Morris's aesthetic ambitions and achievements but also the site for his closest human relations and for much of his connecting with the makers of early modernism. The letters in Volumes III and IV are thoroughly annotated, and through texts and notes provide a new assessment of Morris's career. Included also, as appendices to Volume IV, are two important documents: the first, never before published, is F. S. Ellis's Valuation List of Morris's library, made after Morris's death, and the second, never before reprinted, is the text of what was to be Morris's final essay on socialism, published in April 1896. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

I won't be posthumous yet, if I can help it. Notwithstanding, only think what a Life and Adventures, ' while I am in full scandal, would be worth, together with the membra' of my writing desk, the sixteen beginnings of poems never to be finished I Do you think I would not have shot myself last year, had I not luckily recollected that Mrs. C at and Lady N and all the old women in England would have been delighted besides the agreeable Lunacy, ' of the Crowner's Quest, ' and the regrets of two or three or half a dozen? Be assured that I would live for two reasons, or more there are one or two people whom I have to put out of the world and as many into it, before I can depart in peace if I do so before, I have not fulfilled my mission. Besides, when I turn thirty, I will turn devout; I feel a great vocation that way in Catholic churches, and when I hear the organ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Gray, Vol. 4: Letters, Journal of Tour in Italy I DO not admit that the excellencies of the French writers are measured by the verisimilitude, or the regularities of their Dramas only. Nothing in them, or in our own, even Shakespeare himself, ever touches us, unless rendered verisimile, which by good management may be accomplished even in such absurd stories as the Tempest, the Witches in Macbeth, or the Fairies in the Midsummer Night's Dream and I know not of any writer that has pleased chiefly in proportion to his regularity. Other beauties may indeed be heightened and set off by its means, but of itself it hardly pleases at all. Venice Preserved, or Jane Shore, are not so regular as the Orphan, or Tamerlane, or Lady Jane Grey. III. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Life of Lord Byron, Vol. 4 With His Letters and Journals by Thomas Moore "Your letters of the 18th and 20th are arrived. In my own I have given you the rise, progress, decline, and fall, of my recent malady. It is gone to the devil: I won't pay him so bad a compliment as to say it came from him;-he is too much of a gentleman. It was nothing but a slow fever, which quickened its pace towards the end of its journey. I had been bored with it some weeks-with nocturnal burnings and morning perspirations; but I am quite well again, which I attribute to having had neither medicine nor doctor thereof. Huntington Blatchford, 1920 Frances May Blatchford began this life eleven years earlier than the brother of whom she writes, and ended it thirteen years later. His living presence had been her most vivid and pervasive joy; his memory through those last years was the background of her daily living; the inspiration of her purposes, the refuge from her disappointments. Her love for him developed fast from the elder sister's fondness for the baby of the family into a totally different sentiment. He soon grew old enough to touch her imagination, to awaken her confidence, to rouse her admiration. While still a boy in years he became her practical adviser and her knight of romance. If he had lived to marry, one wonders what woman could have satisfied her requirements as a fit mate for her Galahad, but probably the fact that she was his choice would have covered her with a glamor through which no faults could have emerged save faults of omission or commission toward him. There is no doubt that while gifted with a keen power of character analysis, it was a gift rather than an acquirement; always instinctive, rather than logical, always influenced, sometimes clouded by feeling. These are two letters giving an account of the origin of Philip's war, on which we remarked in the account of Hub bard's Indian wars. There are some interesting facts in these letters, and enough to show that humanit was often forgotten in the treatment of the Indians, whio indeed is not unnatural, when the horrible barbarities they committed against the defenceless is considered. As to the justice of these wars, it is now a mere question of speculation, the In dians are long since extinct, the whites fortunately cultivate the wilds they traversed; the wild species disappeared be fore the civilized one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alongside Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, and Oscar Wilde, Lord Byron possesses a star-quality unlike other classic British authors. His life as poet, philanderer, homosexual, and freedom fighter is legendary, and this new selection from his powerful letters and journals tells the story from the inside, in Byron's own racy and passionate style. Though Byron is chiefly known as a poet, his letters and journals are one of the glories of English prose literature, and one of the greatest British acts of autobiography, alongside Pepys' Diary and Boswell's Journal. This new selection, taken from the authoritative and unbowdlerized edition prepared by Leslie Marchand in the 1970s, not only provides the cream of his informal prose; it amounts to a biography in Byron's own words. No other English writer lived so remarkable an existence, from rented rooms in Aberdeen to a Nottinghamshire peerage, from European fame to English infamy, and notorious Italian exile to a glorious death in the Greek War of Independence. The letters and journals are selected, introduced, and annotated to provide a running narrative of the life and career of his remarkable man in his own unmistakable words.

I have sedulously avoided this rock, and must trust for any little interest my book may possess to the honesty with which I have recorded my impressions, and to the fresh aspect of familiar things to the eye of a denizen of the New World. The fragmentary state in which my letters appear is owing to my fear of wearying readers less interested than my own family by prolonged details or prosing re ections, or disgusting them with the egotism of personal experience.
