Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter-Books of John Hervey, Vol. 2 of 3: First Earl of Bristol; With Sir Thomas Hervey's Letters During Courtship and Poems During Widowhood, 1651 to 1750 I never thought I could have been guilty of a deceit to my dear dear angel, which I now find I have, when I told you so long and so often that it was impossible to love you better than I did at that time; but I find by this short (though tedious) absence how much less able I am than ever to live without you, (thou joy of my life, ) therefore I beg, if you love me, (which were a sin to doubt, ) that if you think either business or pleasure will keep you beyond next week, that you would send the coach for me; I hope in a few days I might be able to take a journey, though the illness you left me with has been so violent that I am very weak and faint; I believe every thing concurring with your absence to teaze me is the cause of it. Yesterday morning I thought it impossible but that my Lord H: must meet with Mon: B:, he having appointed him to come in the morning, and he being (as you know) up and dressd so early; however he loitered here till near 3 before he went out, so missd of him; the same thing has happend to day, though I told him I would deferr my writing till he could tell me something; tis now eight a clock, and he has just sent me word he cant meet with him; things so managd can never come to any thing; therefore pray write your letter as soon as you can, for there is nothing else to be depended upon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kensington Palace is now most famous as the former home of Diana, Princess of Wales, but the palace's glory days came between 1714 and 1760, during the reigns of George I and II . In the eighteenth century, this palace was a world of skulduggery, intrigue, politicking, etiquette, wigs, and beauty spots, where fans whistled open like switchblades and unusual people were kept as curiosities. Lucy Worsley's The Courtiers charts the trajectory of the fantastically quarrelsome Hanovers and the last great gasp of British court life. Structured around the paintings of courtiers and servants that line the walls of the King's Staircase of Kensington Palace-paintings you can see at the palace today-The Courtiers goes behind closed doors to meet a pushy young painter, a maid of honor with a secret marriage, a vice chamberlain with many vices, a bedchamber woman with a violent husband, two aging royal mistresses, and many more. The result is an indelible portrait of court life leading up to the famous reign of George III , and a feast for both Anglophiles and lovers of history and royalty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of women's history, memory is the only way of discovering the past. Other sources simply do not exist. This is true for any history of Maori women in this century. All the women in this book have lived through times of acute social disturbance. Their voices must be heard. Judith Binney, 1992. In eight remarkable oral histories, NGA MOREHU brings alive the experience of Maori women from in the mid-twentieth century. Heni Brown Reremoana Koopu, Maaka Jones, Hei Ariki Algie, Heni Sunderland, Miria Rua, Putiputi Onekawa and Te Akakura Rua talked with Judith Binney and Gillian Chaplin, sharing stories and memoires. These are the women whose 'voices must be heard'. The title, 'the survivors', refects the women's connection with the visionary leader Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki and his followers, who adopted the name 'Nga Morehu' during the wars of the 1860s. But these women are not only survivors: they are also the chosen ones, the leaders of their society. They speak here of richly diverse lives - of arranged marriages and whangai adoption traditions, of working in both Maori and Pakeha communities. They pay testimony to their strong sense of a shared identity created by religious and community teachings.

Book excerpt: The Glorious Revolution of 1688-9 was a decisive moment in England's history; an invading Dutch army forced James II to flee to France, and his son-in-law and daughter, William and Mary, were crowned as joint sovereigns. The wider consequences were no less startling: bloody war in Ireland, Union with Scotland, Jacobite intrigue, deep involvement in two major European wars, Britain's emergence as a great power, a 'financial revolution', greater religious toleration, a riven Church, and a startling growth of parliamentary government. Such changes were only part of the transformation of English society at the time. An enriching torrent of new ideas from the likes of Newton, Defoe, and Addison, spread through newspapers, periodicals, and coffee-houses, provided new views and values that some embraced and others loathed. England's horizons were also growing, especially in the Caribbean and American colonies. For many, however, the benefits were uncertain: the slave trade flourished, inequality widened, and the poor and 'disorderly' were increasingly subject to strictures and statutes. If it was an age of prospects it was also one of anxieties.
