Book excerpt: Over 60 million people live in the SADCC countries; by 2000 AD the number will be over 100 million. The vast majority, city-dwellers as well as farmers, rely on wood fuel for domestic use. Supplies are diminishing as consumption grows. The quality of life is deteriorating yet further and the environment is more and more degraded. But these phenomena are not simply the consequence of a wood shortage which might be cured by some cropping and management policy. They flow from a complex network of causes each contributing in its way to growing poverty and want which has, as one obvious symptom, the shortage of fuel for life's basic purposes. The authors, by means of case studies, examine those causes throughout the nine SADCC countries and consider the policies that can be developed there which will not only help to alleviate the symptom but will help to prevent the imminent catastrophe which it represents. Book excerpt: Ben Law is an experienced and innovative woodsman with a deep commitment to practical sustainability. Here he presents a radical alternative to conventional woodland management that creates biodiverse, healthy environments, yields a great variety of value-added products, provides a secure livelihood for woodland workers and farmers, and benefits the local community. The author views the separation of agriculture from silviculture as unnecessarily limiting and argues for a new approach to planning that will encourage the creation of sustainably managed woodlands for the benefit of people, the local environment, and the global climate. Although specific to Britain, the principles of The Woodland Way will be understood by foresters worldwide. This brilliant book covers every aspect of woodland stewardship from both a practical and philosophical standpoint. Ben Law writes from the heart after long years of struggle with a whole host of naysayers who tried to convince him by fair means and foul to give up his vision for a renaissance in the countryside.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book I of IV This book is about a man's everyday life in prison (that man being me). To me, my life in prison was about "bettering" myself by staying positive in all that I did. You asked, "Raymond what did you do for five year?" (while incarcerated). Well, I read, I wrote, I went to school, and I went to almost every church service I could. I became a chapel aide at the last two prisons where I was incarcerated. As you will find as you begin to read this book, I also took care of my physical body by working out, doing push- ups, crunches, working out at the weight pile and of course doing a lot of walking! Anything I could do to better myself physically and mentally I did. I wrote a lot of poetry, along with writing this book journal that you are about to read. I 'm sure you will feel emotional, sad, and even smiling at times. I was always truthful and I prayed a lot. I'm sure you will be blessed and at times excited as you read about a man's everyday life in prison. I suggest you read slowly and visualize what a man goes through in everyday life in prison. It was God and His presence that seen me through a five- years incarceration. May you be blessed Sincerely Ray Tapp 2018

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating the perfect loaf of bread--a challenge that has captivated bakers for centuries--is now the rage in the hippest places, from Waitsfield, Vermont, to Point Reyes Station, California. Like the new generation of beer drinkers who consciously seek out distinctive craft-brewed beers, many people find that their palates have been reawakened and re-educated by the taste of locally baked, whole-grain breads. Today's village bakers are finding an important new role--linking tradition with a sophisticated new understanding of natural levens, baking science and oven construction. Daniel Wing, a lover of all things artisanal, had long enjoyed baking his own sourdough bread. His quest for the perfect loaf began with serious study of the history and chemistry of bread baking, and eventually led to an apprenticeship with Alan Scott, the most influential builder of masonry ovens in America. Alan and Daniel have teamed up to write this thoughtful, entertaining, and authoritative book that shows you how to bake superb healthful bread and build your own masonry oven. The authors profile more than a dozen small-scale bakers around the U.S. whose practices embody the holistic principles of community-oriented baking based on whole grains and natural leavens. The Bread Builders will appeal to a broad range of readers, including: Connoisseurs of good bread and good food. Home bakers interested in taking their bread and pizza to the next level of excellence. Passionate bakers who fantasize about making a living by starting their own small bakery. Do-it-yourselfers looking for the next small construction project. Small-scale commercial bakers seeking inspiration, the most up-to-date knowledge about the entire bread-baking process, and a marketing edge.
