Book excerpt: In the anonymous office park of a modern software company, whip-smart software engineer Henry Hurt is a man in the middle: of life, of career, and of self-assessment. Henry is mired in his corporate responsibilities until his deathless office existence is torpedoed by the loss of his mother. Overcome by "the pall," Henry seeks escape in a quest for love and purpose, which is occasioned by a crisis in his company's fortunes. Dodging an Iago-like rival, he finds love with a colleague in his department, endangers his bond with his family, and finally confronts the single urgent question of his life. The Adventurist is about relationships: Henry has complicated ones with his sister, Gretchen, who has stayed at home with their father; his lover Jane, a sleek and efficient mirror image of Henry; and a tantalizing potential girlfriend, Madison, the ultimate free spirit. But his relationship to the responsibilities in that anonymous office park may change his fortunes even more than the women in his life.

At 4:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve, thirty-eight-year old Mark Edwards is wearing a cheap wig, sweating profusely, and decomposing while sharing a candlelit dinner with his gluttonous, self-absorbed, and kind-hearted date, Alice Jones. Set in a four-story walk-up apartment complex of studios in Manhattan, Mark is the glue bonding five multi-generational, lonely, jealous, and eccentric tenants. Struggle, conflict, and reconciliation arise from their bruised optimism following: a failed marriage, the death of a spouse, a painful betrayal, and plain bad luck. Haunted by the reappearance of Mary Henson, Mark's teenage girlfriend who died in his arms twenty-four years earlier, he discovers the love he's spent a lifetime seeking, survives in a powerful secret revealed to him from the afterlife. Jonathan M. Schwartz was born in Miami, Florida in 1966 and moved to Boston in 1984 to attend Emerson College. In 1992, he earned a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from City College of New York. Book excerpt: Milk Run: A Gunner's Tale is the true story of William E. Heichel and his experiences flying with the crew of a B-26 Martin Marauder in World War II Europe, primarily as waist gunner and radio operator. Written in a casual style reminiscent of a journal, the story draws heavily from the author's combat experience and seeks to tell the story of life in the U.S. Air Corps without getting heavily into technical information. Several soldiers served as inspiration in discussing army life. In particular, throughout the book several references are made to George Hajek of Capone's south side neighborhood in Chicago (and his many roles on Sunday night's Lux Radio Theater) and Henry Hank Isenberg of Dorchester, Massachusetts. The author regarded these two men as the best friends of his entire life.

Book excerpt: Eleven “impeccably crafted, painfully hilarious” tales of innocence lost and families in search of connection from the New York Times–bestselling author (San Francisco Chronicle). A reluctant trophy wife on her Italian honeymoon; a young woman in love with her sister’s dead boyfriend; a lonely puppeteer flirting with the hostess of a children’s party; a teenage girl traveling to Paris with her father and, unexpectedly, his young girlfriend. Francine Prose’s characters inhabit a world of rich emotion and startling clarity, searching for connection in a world full of surprise and humor; they travel, love, break up, and start again. Even their animal companions—a gecko rescued from a wild party, a dog who bites a bride, a hamster who dies unexpectedly and sends a family on a journey to give it a proper funeral—shine with the emotional complexity and sly satire that make Prose’s work such a joy to experience. In this collection, the New York Times–bestselling author and National Book Award finalist demonstrates the craft, humor, and piercing human insight that make her, in the words of Gary Shteyngart “one of a handful of truly indispensable American writers.”

Book excerpt: Summer at our cell in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Summer in the flood lands and the fens of the Isle of Ely, near Cambridge. The sun shone through the reeds to greet another day, the river Glen looked calm and quite normal for this time of year as it flowed towards joining the river Welland, the reeds were rustling and swaying in the wind. It was a beautiful day, one on which you could only feel glad to be alive. My thoughts were, however, elsewhere as I wrestled with the problems of the future of our kingdom. The freedom and contentment of our Anglo-Saxon population was ever with me at this time. Another day dawned, one of rumour and intrigue, the question on our minds, were the Normans going to arrive or not, and if they did what was going to happen. The word was that they would destroy much of our abbey if we tried to defend it and murder and replace our abbot with one of their own, let alone what they would do to the local population if there was any resistance.

Book excerpt: Sandy Clyburn, (fictitious), was orphaned at five, during Londons Blitz), 1943. He was evacuated to Wales for the remainder of the war, then returned to London, to foster homes and finally an orphanage run by the Skunks, (Shanks) who were drunkards and gamblers, denying their charges their due. Leaving school at age 15 and not wanting to remain in London, he took an audition for the Royal Marines School Of Music, Deal, Kent. He had no previous music study of any kind, other than a friend who showed him some basic march drumming, cadet style. The contract; 3 and 12 years Boy and Man. At his audition he was told, the quota for Band Drummers, (Percussionists), at that time were filled. However, he agreed to accept a position as Bugler, till such time as new Band Drummer positioned opened up, that were frequent throughout the year. (Buglers conscript as Marines, fighting soldiers. RM). Musicians, non-combatant, Bandsmen, RMB), almost a different service. Accepting the position of Bugler/Drummer, RM., would put him on the spot, as it were. The story centers around his trials, tribulations and general struggle to obtain the objective of Musician/Percussionist. Friends help him gain knowledge and ability in order to transfer. Time was not on his side. Boy Musicians had four years training as opposed to one year for Buglers, who were then shipped to a Division, then a ship or Naval establishment. After graduating as a Bugler, eight months later, much to his surprise, hes granted a six month trial period in order to prove his worth. Stepping back to the move from the School, he allowed himself to be coerced and talked into stealing a clarinet. A friend convinces him that the extra cash would be handy for Christmas leave. His involvement, minimal. An instrument or two, would be stashed in his kit while his back was turned, thereby getting them out of barracks without notice. The friend, also a Londoner, made arrangements with Sandy to meet and pedal what had been stolen. That was done. Now, with the granting of a six month trial period he was returning to Deal, that would leave approximately sixteen months before reaching age 18 and adulthood. Through the help of the Percussion Bandmaster, who believed in his ability, he performs and solos Xylophone, at the end of school year, Summer, concert. With just one year to cram, he embarks on a strict practice schedule. February of 1955 is a particular bad winter for an Influenza epidemic and Sandy is admitted into the sick-bay. While there, hes visited by MPs and a Detective, who were investigating instruments theft during Christmas leave. This investigation also harped back to previous occurrences that went unsolved. Sandys name came up, and while sick, he was interrogated. He caves in and is Court Martialed.
