Download or read book Milk Run written by William E. Heichel and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-10-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk Run: A Gunner's Tale is the true story of William E. Heichel and his experiences flying with the crew of a B-26 Martin Marauder in World War II Europe, primarily as waist gunner and radio operator. Written in a casual style reminiscent of a journal, the story draws heavily from the author's combat experience and seeks to tell the story of life in the U.S. Air Corps without getting heavily into technical information. Several soldiers served as inspiration in discussing army life. In particular, throughout the book several references are made to George Hajek of Capone's south side neighborhood in Chicago (and his many roles on Sunday night's Lux Radio Theater) and Henry Hank Isenberg of Dorchester, Massachusetts. The author regarded these two men as the best friends of his entire life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven “impeccably crafted, painfully hilarious” tales of innocence lost and families in search of connection from the New York Times–bestselling author (San Francisco Chronicle). A reluctant trophy wife on her Italian honeymoon; a young woman in love with her sister’s dead boyfriend; a lonely puppeteer flirting with the hostess of a children’s party; a teenage girl traveling to Paris with her father and, unexpectedly, his young girlfriend. Francine Prose’s characters inhabit a world of rich emotion and startling clarity, searching for connection in a world full of surprise and humor; they travel, love, break up, and start again. Even their animal companions—a gecko rescued from a wild party, a dog who bites a bride, a hamster who dies unexpectedly and sends a family on a journey to give it a proper funeral—shine with the emotional complexity and sly satire that make Prose’s work such a joy to experience. In this collection, the New York Times–bestselling author and National Book Award finalist demonstrates the craft, humor, and piercing human insight that make her, in the words of Gary Shteyngart “one of a handful of truly indispensable American writers.”

Book excerpt: Summer at our cell in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Summer in the flood lands and the fens of the Isle of Ely, near Cambridge. The sun shone through the reeds to greet another day, the river Glen looked calm and quite normal for this time of year as it flowed towards joining the river Welland, the reeds were rustling and swaying in the wind. It was a beautiful day, one on which you could only feel glad to be alive. My thoughts were, however, elsewhere as I wrestled with the problems of the future of our kingdom. The freedom and contentment of our Anglo-Saxon population was ever with me at this time. Another day dawned, one of rumour and intrigue, the question on our minds, were the Normans going to arrive or not, and if they did what was going to happen. The word was that they would destroy much of our abbey if we tried to defend it and murder and replace our abbot with one of their own, let alone what they would do to the local population if there was any resistance.

His involvement, minimal. An instrument or two, would be stashed in his kit while his back was turned, thereby getting them out of barracks without notice. The friend, also a Londoner, made arrangements with Sandy to meet and pedal what had been stolen. That was done. Now, with the granting of a six month trial period he was returning to Deal, that would leave approximately sixteen months before reaching age 18 and adulthood.
