Book excerpt: In the summer of 2019, a group of kia'i, or protectors, made up of kānaka 'ōiwi (Native Hawaiians) and their allies came together to prevent the construction of the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT) on the dormant volcano Maunakea. In Mele on the Mauna, Joseph Keola Donaghy explores how music, and especially haku mele, or Hawaiian language composers, played a crucial role in this defense. Musicians flocked to the mauna (mountain) to perform for the kia'i and a worldwide audience via social media. Haku mele created new songs at unprecedented levels, releasing many commercially with proceeds benefiting organizations providing support services and supplies to the kia'i. This book features over 30 of the author's interviews with individuals who participated in musical activities connected with this movement, including kia'i and their supporters, composers, musicians, and community leaders. And though the place has changed across time, its beauty still abounds. Lindsey says he suffers from island fever, and Im glad I do. Mark Twain described Hawaii as the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean. Twain is one reason Ive never ventured far from home. He convinced me early on that all I need is right here. Im stuck to this rock called Hawaii forever. In his work life, Lindsey has strived to serve the interests of his lhui (people) to the best of his abilities, first as a social worker with the Family Court of the Third Circuit, then as a park ranger with the National Park Service at Puukohol Heiau National Historic Site. Lindsey believes that as Hawaiian Americans living in a globalized world, for the sake of Mother Earth and our children, the pono (right) thing for us to do is to let bygones be bygones and to forgive but not forget the sins of yesteryears that were committed against us. We must live joyously in the moment and look with hope and optimism to the future . . . Its said the one constant in life is change. One of the lesser fictionalized characters in The 5th of July is Abigail Hathaway McMoore. Her takeaway lesson for us is this: for the sake of our children and the children of the world, we should not be bitter toward change but embrace it, be its advocate, not its victim; its champion, not tormentor; its friend, not adversary. As a contemporary Hawaiian, I subscribe to that philosophy. The 5th of July is Lindseys second book. His first title, Latitude 20.04N Longitude 155.71W was published in 2013.

Though performed on a non-Hawaiian instrument, it is widely considered to be an authentic Hawaiian tradition grounded in Hawaiian aesthetics and cultural values. In Listen But Don’t Ask Question Kevin Fellezs listens to Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) and non-Hawaiian slack key guitarists in Hawai‘i, California, and Japan, attentive to the ways in which notions of Kanaka Maoli belonging and authenticity are negotiated and articulated in all three locations. In Hawai‘i, slack key guitar functions as a sign of Kanaka Maoli cultural renewal, resilience, and resistance in the face of appropriation and occupation, while in Japan it nurtures a merged Japanese-Hawaiian artistic and cultural sensibility. For diasporic Hawaiians in California, it provides a way to claim Hawaiian identity. By demonstrating how slack key guitar is a site for the articulation of Hawaiian values, Fellezs illuminates how slack key guitarists are reconfiguring notions of Hawaiian belonging, aesthetics, and politics throughout the transPacific.

This collection examines "rhetorical regionalism," or the relationships we have to physical regions and the idea of regionality. Regional rhetorics are more than simply the fact of local conditions in certain spaces. They are the ways people produce feelings of belonging and discourses of normalcy within those spaces. The authors in this collection bypass familiar narratives of nationality and localism in order to imagine regions as interfaces that help us to negotiate everyday life. Regions are more than physical spaces, therefore. Regional rhetorics can provide different narratives in order to help us invent new kinds of connections to place and publics. They give us new descriptions of relationships, a power that merges together the tectonic (spatial) and the architectonic (discursive) impulses of rhetoric.
