Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lets Get Down to Basics was originally written as curriculum for a class for new Christians or people who were new to the church and to the particular viewpoint of Wesleyan-Arminiam theology. It has thirteen chapters and each chapter has review questions at the end with the answers at the end of the book, making it excellent for a class, for a personal review or for someone who wants to investigate the basics of Christianity on their own. The book does not criticize any other religions or branches of Christianity, but is an attempt to lift up basics of the faith that are common to all Christians. There are some chapters that are particular to the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) or to the Wesleyan-Arminian believers, but it is not written in a way that criticizes those who believe differently and might be helpful to those of other traditions so they understand beliefs from this point of view. Chapters that fall into this category include Chapter 7 The Second Step (the doctrine of sanctification as a second definite work of grace) and Chapter 9 Develop a Lifestyle of Holiness (aiming for the goal of a holy lifestyle. Chapter 11 Signs of the Times in the Christian Life (explains ordinances of the church, including baptism and communion, two almost universal teachings of Christianity, and footwashing, which is practiced by only a few church groups. Chapter 13 The Last Chapter deals with the end times from an amillenial eschatological perspective. Even if this is not your theological view, it might be helpful for you to understand end times teaching as viewed from the amillenial perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, brought the promise of integration to Little Rock, Arkansas, but it was hard-won for the nine black teenagers chosen to integrate Central High School in 1957. They ran a gauntlet flanked by a rampaging mob and a heavily armed Arkansas National Guard—opposition so intense that soldiers from the elite 101st Airborne Division were called in to restore order. For Melba Beals and her eight friends those steps marked their transformation into reluctant warriors—on a battlefield that helped shape the civil rights movement. Warriors Don't Cry, drawn from Melba Beals's personal diaries, is a riveting true account of her junior year at Central High—one filled with telephone threats, brigades of attacking mothers, rogue police, fireball and acid-throwing attacks, economic blackmail, and, finally, a price upon Melba's head. With the help of her English-teacher mother; her eight fellow warriors; and her gun-toting, Bible-and-Shakespeare-loving grandmother, Melba survived. And, incredibly, from a year that would hold no sweet-sixteen parties or school plays, Melba Beals emerged with indestructible faith, courage, strength, and hope.

Book excerpt: Laugh-out-loud observations from “America’s foremost humorist” (Chicago Tribune). What Men Don’t Tell Women: Well, that’s just for starters. Roy Blount Jr. realized that nearly all of his writing involved things people don’t tell people: what Southerners don’t tell Northerners, what the sick don’t want to hear from the well, what no one would ever tell their mother, and what authors rarely admit to their readers. That all changes in this “honest . . . funny” collection of confessional essays about sex, friendship, marriage, male bonding, female patience, and Elvis (The Boston Globe). One Fell Soup: A deliciously funny stew of reviews, diatribes, investigations, meditations, assorted grumblings, and verse about the absurdities of American life, death, fears, and ambition. Included in these fifty-nine easy pieces: the truth (as Blount sees it) about nudism, cricket-fighting, bowling, macaroni and cheese, black holes and black socks, nuclear holocausts, the CIA, domesticated fowl, pork bellies, God, and more. The whole shebang from “one of the most clever (see sly, witty, cunning, nimble) wordsmiths cavorting in the English language” (Carl Hiaasen). Camels Are Easy, Comedy’s Hard: Flesh-eating piranha! Synchronized swimming! Rubber chickens! Edith Wharton! Crossword puzzles! All and then some in this giddy compendium of essays, celebrity profiles, silly games, and side trips. Parts sports journalism, literary criticism, travel writing, and aborted novel, tossed with a few poems and a neo-Biblical one-act play, this is an uproarious—and sometimes heartening—anthology of adventures from “one writer who never fails to please” (The Village Voice).

Book excerpt: From the pen of TERRY HAYWARD, himself a retired criminal attorney who practised law in South Africa during the apartheid years. An avid wildlife conservationist, Terry has fictionalised a number of his most notorious cases and has linked them to the blight of poaching sweeping the continent of Africa. The result is almost 2,000 pages of non-stop action, adventure, drama and mystery from the court-room to crowded high-rise cities and to the rural remoteness of the African bushveld. In the latest work in the series, THE HANGING TREE, sees lawyer Jack Delaney, and his six-foot-seven Zulu sidekick Moses Dlamini (pronounced Shla-mee-nee), known as the Refrigerator, called in to investigate a kidnapping, in reality a lever to bribe the owners of a game reserve to sell. In turn, it becomes the catalyst in a host of actions and re-actions leading to unexpected alliances, coupled with violence, murder and confrontations with law - not to mention lions, elephants and crocodiles in the wild. Terry has always been perturbed that most books that end up becoming best-sellers nowadays seem to be judged by the amount of foul language and sexual activity which can be incorporated into the story. The Jack Delaney chronicles are his contribution to writing a really good yarn without having to resort to such ruses. There is one more book in the series still in the pipeline which Terry hopes to get to Abela Publishing within the next month or so. 10% of the Authors royalty will be donated to WILDLIFE ACT, a conservation charity in KZN (KwaZulu-Natal), South Africa. Detective Jack Stiles is a 38-year-old career cop with a stellar record of service. He’s a former college tight end, fast and tough, capable of body-slamming and cuffi ng a suspect twice his size. Stiles’ partner, Traci Little, a former patrol offi cer with plenty of street smarts has now advanced to the Homicide squad. She and Stiles are Luttwak’s most intuitive detective unit. Secretly, and against Department rules, they are deep into sex. Another detective unit is Dick Cheevers and Ed Chase. Cheevers is black, smart and scary. Backing him up is Chase, white as ice cream, not that either one cares. Irv Miller and partner Kaz Kazurian are opposites in temperament. Miller is contemplative. Kazurian is hot-tempered, a give-no-quarter cop in accordance with his European blood lines. Luttwak and his troops are frustrated by clever, corrupt and merciless killer Victor Krait, straight out of a dime stretch at Terminal Island and looking for revenge. And so it goes in Hollywood, city of the night.
