And, after three officers and two civilians are killed in the crossfire of a Miami gang standoff, it's time for someone to strike back. Yet with little concrete proof to use against those supplying the illegal weapons, the police are helpless. Fortunately for them Mack Bolan doesn't need evidence. It's old-fashioned justice he's after. Going solo on his mission, Bolan soon discovers Miami is just the beginning. An arms dealer has set up operations in New York, Chicago and New Mexico. But this supplier isn't the only one wanting a slice of the American gun pie. Another more ruthless group is ready to step in and will take out anyone who gets in their way—unless the Executioner can take them down first.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of collaboration by Jerry Ravino and Jack Carty, veterans of the Korean War with the Flame Platoon, Headquarters Company, First Tank Battalion, First Marine Division, who did not meet until almost 50 years after what went down in history as the Forgotten War. Although the two former tankers served with the Flame Platoon in different places and different times in that conflict, it is a testament to their determination to research and record a part of the war that heretofore had not been chronicled in detail. Though it has been some 50 years past the fact, this is their story -- as memory best serves them and others who helped them tell it. Learn more about the FLAME DRAGONS @ www.flamedragons.com.

Book excerpt: Pharmacology in Drug Discovery and Development: Understanding Drug Response, Third Edition is an introductory resource that illustrates how pharmacology can be used to furnish the tools necessary to analyze different drug behavior and trace this behavior to its root cause or molecular mechanism of action. Chapters logically build upon one another to show how to characterize the pharmacology of any given molecule and allow for more informed predictions of drug effects in all biological systems. New chapters are dedicated to the interdisciplinary drug discovery environment in both industry and academia, and special techniques involved in new drug screening and lead optimization. The updates to the Third Edition include a new section converting "descriptive" data into "predictive" data through comparison to mathematical models, expansion on enzymes, drug metabolites and drug–drug interactions, and two new chapters. The newly developed companion website hosts further educational resources to complement the book. As in previous editions, this new edition includes numerous valuable chapter summaries, detailed references, practical examples, and case studies throughout. - Fully updated, including two new chapters on the science of finding drug molecules - Introduces the discipline to a scientist new to the area - Demonstrates the value of pharmacology in the drug discovery process - Presents a wide variety of techniques in simple terms - Includes interactive exercises in the companion website

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology has always played a central role in international politics; it shapes the ways states fight during wartime and compete during peacetime. Today, rapid advancements have contributed to a widespread sense that the world is again on the precipice of a new technological era. Emerging technologies have inspired much speculative commentary, but academic scholarship can improve the discussion with disciplined theory-building and rigorous empirics. This book aims to contribute to the debate by exploring the role of technology – both military and non-military – in shaping international security. Specifically, the contributors to this edited volume aim to generate new theoretical insights into the relationship between technology and strategic stability, test them with sound empirical methods, and derive their implications for the coming technological age. This book is very novel in its approach. It covers a wide range of technologies, both old and new, rather than emphasizing a single technology. Furthermore, this volume looks at how new technologies might affect the broader dynamics of the international system rather than limiting the focus to a stability. The contributions to this volume walk readers through the likely effects of emerging technologies at each phase of the conflict process. The chapters begin with competition in peacetime, move to deterrence and coercion, and then explore the dynamics of crises, the outbreak of conflict, and war escalation in an environment of emerging technologies. The chapters in this book, except for the Introduction and the Conclusion, were originally published in the Journal of Strategic Studies.

Book excerpt: Bringing together the law of armed conflict governing the use of weapons into a single volume, the fully updated Second Edition of Weapons and the Law of Armed Conflict interprets these rules and discusses the factors influencing future developments in weapons law. After relating the historical evolution of weapons law, the book discusses the important customary principles that are the foundation of the subject, and provides a condensed account of the law that exists on the use of weapons. The treaties and customary rules applying to particular categories of weapon are thereafter listed and explained article by article and rule by rule in a series of chapters. Having stated the law as it is, the book then explores the way in which this dynamic field of international law develops in the light of various influences. The legal review of weapons is discussed, both from the perspective of how such reviews should be undertaken and how such a system should be established. Having stated the law as it is, the book then investigates the way in which this dynamic field of international law develops in the light of various influences. In the final chapter, the prospects for future rule change are considered. This Second Edition includes a discussion of new treaty law on expanding bullets, the arms trade, and norms in relation to biological and chemical weapons. It also analyses the International Manuals on air and missile warfare law and on cyber warfare law, the challenges posed by 'lethal autonomous weapon systems', and developments in the field of information and telecommunications otherwise known as cyber activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among other major navies, that of the United States put armed naval landing parties ashore during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although done primarily to protect American interests, they also safeguarded international communities against the "savage hordes" of "uncivilized" nations. Specially designed light field guns carried aboard gunboats and larger warships sometimes supported the bluejackets and marines, customarily when larger parties more likely to face sharp actions went ashore. Most American naval landings of the nineteenth century took place in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, whereas the following century saw landings against larger and otherwise civilized nations such as Mexico and Russia. The last of these landings were made in conjunction with the Allied assaults on North Africa in November 1942. The first purpose-built landing guns, the bronze Dahlgren muzzleloading smoothbore howitzers, saw extensive deployment during the Civil War, and postwar in Korea. The US Navy's very first steel breechloading guns were landing pieces. Five different marks of 3-inch breechloading guns and several guns of other calibers followed in successive decades, serving for varying periods. The history and characteristics of these landing guns are chronicled.
