Book excerpt: This year's report highlights innovative policies and progammes which countries have adopted to accelerate progress on the MDGs, such as the deployment of community members as health workers, Niger's Ecole des Maris (School for Husbands) initiative, and the establishment of community-run and -funded schools. It is our hope that publicizing such success stories will not only help document policy innovations for SDG implementation, but also keep the focus on the unfinished business of the MDGs as countries and the global community make the transition to implementation of the post-2015 Development Agenda. The report demonstrates that sustaining and advancing beyond the gains made under the MDGs require new approaches which embrace all three dimensions of sustainability -- the environmental, economic and social. Progress under the SDGs will be assessed not only by the results achieved, but also by considering how they were achieved. Method will assume greater relevance in the post-2015 development paradigm.

Book excerpt: This book brings together results of studies on progresses and challenges in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Lesotho, Kenya, Botswana, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria. The authors focus on selected goals as cases; and the book presents resulting lessons that can inform the post-2015 development agenda. The studies are against the background that in September 2000, world leaders from 189 countries, including 147 Heads of State, gathered at the United Nations General Assembly to consider the challenges of the new millennium. They adopted the Millennium Declaration, which set out a vision for inclusive and sustainable globalization: UN 2000 (A/RES/55/2). The leaders pledged to work towards ensuring that conditions of extreme poverty are eradicated wherever they existed. To realise this declaration, the UN established eight MDGs to be achieved by 2015. The goals were broken down into 18 concrete targets and 48 indicators to track progresses in implementation. For the years lost 2000, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been striving to achieve the goals. So far, some have achieved some of the goals, and the results toward the rest of the goals are also by and large positive, though off-target.

Book excerpt: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted sustainable development goals (SDGs), which intended to end poverty and achieve people's well-being and environmental sustainability by 2030. On the other hand, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were primarily aimed at ending extreme poverty in all its forms in developing countries. The most important departure from this is that the SDGs explicitly broaden the focus to all countries - including the developed countries as sustainability cannot be achieved in isolation. The SDGs provide a unique opportunity for shaping law, policy and institutions across the globe for the implementation of effective and ambitious plan of action to deliver sustainability for all. However, as some of the least developed countries (LDCs), see SDGs as an extension of MDGs, MDG-2 or MDGs plus, they might be tempted to adopt the MDGs approach while implementing the SDGs. Again, in the developed world, certain goals will matter much more, and efforts can be tailored to reflect this in their SDG implementation strategy. That is why, it is vital to understand the lessons learned from the implementation of MDGs and negotiations of SDGs. It is also crucial to understand, how to use specific goals strategically in order to press for change and how to link several goals to generate co-benefits and complementary effects in an effort to create coherence between international norms to domestic policies. It is important to have a supportive and robust legal framework and institutions to build partnerships among global and governmental institutions and private entities to strengthen the three inter-linked pillars of sustainability (social, economic and environmental). This work is a case study on Bangladesh and Sweden that aims to understand relevant policies and institutional approaches towards a coherent, transformative and integrated approach for the achievement of SDGs.
