The impacts of development on biological diversity, over exploitation of resources of commercial value, changes in land use and land cover, and fragmentation of habitats have led to fastest rate of decline in biodiversity in the 20th Century. This publication provides an insight into the concept of biodiversity, its value and uses, aspects of conservation of material and traditional knowledge, the linkage between ethnic communities and biodiversity, and several other topics of interest in a lucid and user-friendly manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since antiquity, big mammals have inspired fear as well as fantasy among humans. Not only do megafauna pervade the domains of religion, art, literature, and folklore, it is also now widely acknowledged that they can serve as important, if not always adequate, indices of environmental quality. In this book, Shibani Bose looks into eras bygone in order to chronicle the journeys of three mega mammals, the rhinoceros, elephant, and tiger, across millennia in early north India. Carefully sifting through archaeological evidence and literary records in Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, and classical Western accounts, Bose documents the presence of these big mammals in diverse cultural contexts, from hunter-gatherer societies to the first urban civilization of India and beyond. This work aims to reconstruct human interactions with these mega species through time while trying to understand the larger ecology of ancient India. This book is especially well-timed as the conservation of our megafaunal heritage is a major concern for biologists, ecologists, and conservationists. It underlines the need to historicize human interactions with these mega mammals with the contention that awareness regarding their past is critical for their future.

Book excerpt: The processing of pork is a common technological practice that modifies the taste, flavor, texture and color of raw pork meat. Due to pork’s accessible price and versatility, the manufacture of pork products to offer a variety of options to consumers is an important strategy of the meat industries in this sector to improve profits and expand into new markets at the local, regional and international levels. The diversity of pork products reflects the diversity and history of many local cultures around the world, as well as a growing interest in preserving traditional processing practices. Pork: Meat Quality and Processed Meat Products delves into the various kinds of pork and the methods used to prepare it for consumption, including fresh meat products, fermented sausages, dry-cured products, blood sausages and cooked sausages. Each category starts with a specific raw material (entire cut vs. minced pork meat) to which is added a unique combination of ingredients (e.g., sodium chloride, starter cultures, blood, seasoning and spices). The method of processing (such as salting, drying, thermal processing and fermenting) takes consumer tastes and storage needs into account, as well as how each product will be consumed (cooked, sliced, spread and as an ingredient in other dishes, for instance). Consequently, a wide range of products made from pork are currently being produced worldwide. Added to this is the increasing importance of ingredients and health factors to consumers; the resulting demand for products that address specific health concerns is having a significant impact on research into and the production of pork meat products. Key Features: Comprehensively presents and discusses the wealth of information about pork products Includes specific details about the processing, quality of final products and innovation in the industry Presents innovative, health-oriented approaches to making traditional and commercial pork products Discusses healthier pork meat products that address consumer trends and government recommendations The production of health-oriented pork products is an emerging and promising investigation area with a direct impact on the currect market for meat products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how varying levels of human disturbance manifested through different management regimes influence composition, richness, diversity and abundance of key mammal, bird and plant species, even within ecologically similar habitats. Based on our results, we show the critical importance of the ‘wildlife preservation’ approach for effective biodiversity conservation. The study also provides examples of a practical application of rigorous methods of quantitative sampling of different plant and animal taxa as well as human influences, thus serving as a useful manual for protected area managers. Protected areas of various kinds have been established in India with the goal of arresting decline in, and to provide for, recovery of biodiversity and ecosystem services. A model that targets ‘wildlife preservation’ under state ownership is practiced across the country. However, forests in India are under intensive human pressure and varying levels of protection; therefore, protected areas may also experience open-access resource use, a model that is being aggressively advocated as a viable alternative to ‘preservationism’. We have evaluated the conservation efficacy of alternative forest management models by quantifying levels of biodiversity under varied levels of access, resource extraction and degree of state-sponsored protection in the Nagarahole forest landscape of southwestern India.
