Book Synopsis Paul, the Apostle of Christ by : Ferdinand Christian Baur
Download or read book Paul, the Apostle of Christ written by Ferdinand Christian Baur and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F.C. Baur's monumental study Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ (1845) is one of the greatest works of all time on the Apostle to the Gentiles. Laying the basis for modern Pauline scholarship, its three sections in turn thoroughly deconstruct the account of Paul found in Acts, examine the authentic, deuteron-Pauline and Pastoral Epistles, and draw the various strands of Paul's thought into a cohesive whole. In the first two parts Baur's historical-critical skills are at their finest, while in the third the influence of Hegel and Schleiermacher can be seen as Baur presents a comprehensive synthesis of Pauline theology. Since the original nineteenth-century English translation of Baur's masterpiece is no longer adequate, Hodgson and Brown's new edition will serve as the definitive resource for future scholarship. They not only present a new translation of the German, but also provide critical annotations and translations of all the scriptural passages originally quoted in Greek. Baur on Paul becomes truly available in English for the first time.

Download or read book The Epistle General of James written by John Peter Lange and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented here, in paperback for the first time, is John Peter Lange's Theologischhomiletisches Bibelwerk. Intended to help preachers prepare sermons the commentary series is essentially biblical and evangelical catholic. This 19th century commentary has served as a standard reference for more than a century. Many early reviewers regarded Schaff's edition with his additional material as superior to the original. It has proven to be a complete and useful Commentary and continues to prove especially valuable to ministers. It contains critical annotations of the text and its translation, and a threefold commentary, exegetical, doctrinal, and homiletical. Under these three heads the text is viewed from every aspect.

Book Synopsis Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ by : Ferdinand Christian Baur
Download or read book Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ written by Ferdinand Christian Baur and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baur's Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ was the major study of Paul published in the nineteenth century, and it is one of the greatest works of all time on Paul. It lays the basis for modern Pauline scholarship. The first part, "The Life and Activity of the Apostle Paul," consists of a thoroughgoing deconstruction of the account of Paul found in the Acts of the Apostles. While the author of Acts passed on historical traditions about Paul, he greatly embellished them with stories about the miraculous feats of the apostles, and constructed the entire account to show fictitious parallels between the apostles Peter and Paul. The second part, "The Epistles of the Apostle Paul," is divided into three main sections: the authentic epistles of Paul (Galatians, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Romans), the deutero-Pauline epistles (Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians, Thessalonians, Philemon), and the Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy, Titus). In the first two parts Baur's historical-critical skills are at their finest. The third part, "The Apostle's Theological Framework," draws the elements of Pauline theology into a magnificent synthesis, where the influence of Hegel and Schleiermacher is evident. The earlier English translation is no longer adequate. Our new translation presents a very readable text with critical annotations and translations of all the scriptural passages quoted in Greek. Baur on Paul truly becomes available in English for the first time.

Book Synopsis Sacra Pagina: Colossians and Ephesians by : Margaret Y. MacDonald
Download or read book Sacra Pagina: Colossians and Ephesians written by Margaret Y. MacDonald and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No two works in the Pauline Epistles resemble each other as closely as Colossians and Ephesians. Often recognized for their majestic tone and powerful theological statement, Colossians and Ephesians also present many challenges of interpretation. Most commentaries on these letters seem preoccupied with the same few issues, particularly the question of authorship. As MacDonald addresses these classic questions, she offers a fresh perspective on Colossians and Ephesians by making use of insights from the social sciences. Moreover, by paying attention to subtle differences between the two letters, she brings their distinct perspectives into sharp relief. MacDonald highlights the interplay between Colossians and Ephesians and the social life of New Testament communities. She illustrates how the texts reflect ancient cultural values and are influenced by particular aspects of community life such as worship and household existence. In particular, she reflects on the issues faced by these communities as they formed institutions and interacted with the society around them. She shows the struggles of the New Testament communities to survive and maintain a distinct identity in first-century society. Margaret Y. MacDonald is a professor in the department of religious studies at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. She and Carolyn Osiek have coauthored (with Janet H. Tulloch) A Women's Place: House Churches in Earliest Christianity (Fortress, 2006). Her research has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
