Book excerpt: Through the examination of the concept of freedom in the writings of St Francis de Sales the author concludes that, in contradistinction to a contemporary understanding of freedom perceived as self-determination, a Salesian understanding privileges freedom's relationship to 'the good'. This situates St Francis de Sales in the classical Thomistic tradition of freedom's necessary relationship to the good, but involves a methodological shift as he employs the Renaissance starting point of 'the turn to the subject'. This study demonstrates how St Francis arrives inductively at what St Thomas demonstrated deductively, namely, the essential relationship of freedom to the good. Along with this Thomistic influence, the author analyses the Salesian indebtedness to Augustinian anthropology which explains the primacy St Francis gives to the will, and consequently, to love. Love, understood as the heart's movement towards the good, allows the Salesian approach to move beyond the confines of a traditional faculty psychology to embrace a more biblical understanding of the human person. This examination of love's relationship to freedom reveals their teleological and archaeological natures, coming back to our origins wherein we discover the source of our freedom bestowed on us as a gift from God.

Book excerpt: In the wake of the French Revolution and other upheavals, Don Bosco (1815–1888) and other nineteenth-century founders and spiritual leaders contributed to the development of spiritual practices and perspectives on the Christian life that have been described as the “Salesian Pentecost.” Here are translations of and commentaries on the little-known spiritual writings of Don Bosco, his collaborators, and his contemporaries involved in the Salesian Pentecost. These diverse persons, fully engaged in apostolic ministry or occupied with the demands of ordinary life as lay women and men, were at the same time engaged in conscious spiritual practices that sought the interior exchange of the heart of Jesus for the human heart.

He became noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land resulting from the Protestant Reformation. He is known also for his writings on the topic of spiritual direction and spiritual formation, particularly the Introduction to the Devout Life and the Treatise on the Love of God. In 1583, De Sales went to the Collège de Clermont (later renamed Lycée Louis-le-Grand) in Paris, then a Jesuit institution, to study rhetoric and humanities. As a nobleman, he was accompanied by his own servant and by a priest tutor, Abbe Deage. To please his father, he took lessons in the gentlemanly pursuits of riding, dancing, and fencing. De Sales is described as intelligent and handsome, tall and well built with blue-grey eyes, somewhat reserved and quiet, and a welcome guest in the homes of the nobility among whom his father had connections. —BOOKS— INTRODUCTION TO A DEVOUT LIFE LETTERS TO PERSONS IN RELIGION LETTERS TO PERSONS IN THE WORLD PRACTICAL PIETY THE CATHOLIC CONTROVERSY THE CONSOLING THOUGHTS OF SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES THE MYSTICAL EXPLANATION OF THE CANTICLE OF CANTICLES THE SECRET OF SANCTITY THE SPIRITUAL CONFERENCES TREATISE ON THE LOVE OF GOD PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Becoming a New Self, Moshe Sluhovsky examines the diffusion of spiritual practices among lay Catholics in early modern Europe. By offering a close examination of early modern Catholic penitential and meditative techniques, Sluhovsky makes the case that these practices promoted the idea of achieving a new self through the knowing of oneself. Practices such as the examination of conscience, general confession, and spiritual exercises, which until the 1400s had been restricted to monastic elites, breached the walls of monasteries in the period that followed. Thanks in large part to Franciscans and Jesuits, lay urban elites—both men and women—gained access to spiritual practices whose goal was to enhance belief and create new selves. Using Michel Foucault’s writing on the hermeneutics of the self, and the French philosopher’s intuition that the early modern period was a moment of transition in the configurations of the self, Sluhovsky offers a broad panorama of spiritual and devotional techniques of self-formation and subjectivation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern theological engagements on deification have undergone two major paradigm shifts. First, the study of deification shifted from the periphery of theological discourse to its center. For Adolf von Harnack, deification was a pagan import that fatally corrupted and distorted the Gospel message of salvation. In response, the positive retrieval of the concept of deification belongs to the early years of the twentieth century. By the 1910s in Russian religious thought and by the 1930s in much Roman Catholic theology, deification had become a magnet concept attracting attention from many different viewpoints. The second important shift relates to how deification is characterized. Recent studies question the exclusively 'Eastern' character of deification and draw attention to the engagements of this theme in Latin patristic and later Western Christian sources. Reassessing the evidence for these two major shifts, The Oxford Handbook of Deification comprehensively explores the points of convergence and difference on the constitutive elements of deification in different traditions, and offers a foundation for ecumenical and interreligious dialogues. The Handbook's first part analyzes the cultural and scriptural roots of deification; the second part explores the most significant historical contributions to the understanding of deification in the early, medieval, and modern periods; the third part develops systematic connections. Readers will discover a surprizing breadth, depth, and diversity of theologies of deification in Christian traditions. Throughout the Handbook, leading scholars in the field of Deification Studies propose vital new insights from a variety of perspectives for this central mystery at the heart of the Christian faith.

Book excerpt: The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems– both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.

Book excerpt: The Greatest Works of French Literature serves as a monumental anthology, bringing together an unparalleled collection of works that span genres, styles, and centuries, showcasing the richness of French literary heritage. From the intricate psychological narratives of Marcel Proust to the dramatized societal critiques of Émile Zola, and the romanticized adventures by Alexandre Dumas, this collection transcends the mere assemblage of texts to become a tapestry of human thought and emotion. The anthology highlights the evolution of French literature, embracing the diversity of its expressions - from the foundational philosophical discourses of Jean-Jacques Rousseau to the compelling modernist poetry of Charles Baudelaire. This range not only celebrates the individual genius of each writer but also underscores the collective cultural and historical journey of France itself. The contributing authors and editors, each a luminary in their right, represent the zenith of French literary achievement across several eras. From the Renaissance vibrancy of François Rabelais to the Enlightenment provocations of Voltaire, and into the romantic and existential depths explored by Victor Hugo and Gaston Leroux, the compilation mirrors the broad spectrum of intellectual and artistic movements that have shaped not just French, but global literature. The anthology not only demonstrates the contributors' pivotal roles in crafting the narrative of French literature but also contextualizes their works within the larger tapestry of global literary and philosophical thought, inviting readers to appreciate the dialogues between French literature and worldwide cultural shifts. The Greatest Works of French Literature is an indispensable volume for anyone wishing to dive into the depths of French literary brilliance. It offers readers the unique opportunity to traverse time and genre within the pages of a single book, from enlightenment to romanticism, realism, and beyond. This collection is not just a testament to the enduring legacy of its authors but an invitation to explore the complexities of human experience through the lens of French literary imagination. Whether a student, scholar, or simply a lover of literature, this anthology promises a panoramic view into the heart of French literary artistry, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich threads woven into the fabric of cultural history.
