Each image in the series exists in the real world - an old board of insulation, an industrial garage door, a silo and corncrib, a track in the mud and wrapped cargo on pallets. At the same time, each has been composed to accentuate the inherently abstract qualities of the reflective surfaces and their interplay with light.

Book excerpt: A Year Inside is a catalog of works by Leslie Parke painted in the time of COVID between 1 March 2020 and 19 March 2021. Almost every painting made during this time was either black or gray. With all of the paintings in this series there is a sense that the painting is a membrane and through these paintings you can pass into another universe... a passageway through to the other side. And the other side is really our internal world and our sense of the universe.

Book Synopsis Monet and His Muse by : Mary Mathews Gedo
Download or read book Monet and His Muse written by Mary Mathews Gedo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sets this study apart from the vast literature on Monet is Gedo's focused, jargon-free, accessible, psychoanalytic assessment of Monet and his relationship with his first wife and mistress, Camille Doncieux, and the impact of this complex relationship on the artist's work. Using this psychobiographical approach in conducting a careful reading of primary source material and Monet's paintings, Gedo (independent scholar) does much to debunk a good deal of the mythology surrounding the artist's life at this period. She offers fresh insights into the content of many of Monet's major paintings, particularly his figurative works that feature Camille as a model or subject. So, for example, Gedo proposes that Monet's Camille (or The Woman in the Green Dress) from 1866, via its composition, "functioned as a metaphor for the uncertainty characterizing the relationship between lovers," in addition to exposing publicly Camille as Monet's mistress. As is the danger when applying psychoanalysis to the study of art history, some of Gedo's assertions and interpretations approach the level of implausibility; however, these flights of psychoanalytic fancy are few and far between. The writing is engaging, endnotes are extensive but not oppressive, and the book is sufficiently illustrated with many images in color. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. Download or read book My Art World written by John Seed and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young man, art writer John Seed had a knack for meeting extraordinary people. Mentored by Bay Area artist Nathan Oliveira and introduced to modern art by collectors Hunk and Moo Anderson, Seed was perfectly positioned to observe the explosive growth of the art world in the early 1980s. He had his portrait done by Jean-Michel Basquiat, met Richard Dienbenkorn, worked for an intense young art dealer named Larry Gagosian, got advice from painter Robert De Niro Sr. and became a founding staff member of MOCA in Los Angeles. My Art World includes Seed's vivid recollections-including essays on Joan Brown, Sam Francis and Frank Lobdell- as well as samples of his later essays for the HuffingtonPost. Once called an "Art World Anthony Bourdain" John Seed's writings are revealing, readable and honest. My Art World brings together writings that were previously published in magazines, in art catalogs, on the author's personal website, on the HuffingtonPost and on Hyperallergic.com.
