Book excerpt: The striking engravings of Julien-David Le Roy's The Ruins of the Most Beautiful Monuments of Greece (1758) first revealed the architectural wonders of ancient Athens to the West. Part architectural theory, part archaeological report, part travelogue, the greatly expanded edition of 1770 -- here translated into English -- is entirely original in its understanding of the spirit of classical Greek architecture and in its influence on the direction of contemporary architectural creation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Orientalism is not a brainchild of nineteenth-century European imperialists and colonialists, but, as Urs App demonstrates, was born in the eighteenth century after a very long gestation period defined less by economic or political motives than by religious ideology. Based on sources from a dozen languages, many unavailable in English, The Birth of Orientalism presents a completely new picture of this protracted genesis, its underlying dynamics, and the Western discovery of Asian religions from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. App documents the immense influence of Japan and China and describes how the Near Eastern cradle of civilization moved toward mother India. Moreover, he shows that some of India's purportedly oldest texts were products of eighteenth-century European authors. Though Western engagement with non-Abrahamic Asian religions reaches back to antiquity and can without exaggeration be called the largest-scale religiocultural encounter in history, it has so far received surprisingly little attention—which is why some of its major features and their role in the birth of modern Orientalism are described here for the first time. The study of Asian documents had a profound impact on Europe's intellectual makeup. Suddenly the Bible had much older competitors from China and India, Sanskrit threatened to replace Hebrew as the world's oldest language, and Judeo-Christianity appeared as a local phenomenon on a dramatically expanded, worldwide canvas of religions and mythologies. Orientalists were called upon as arbiters in a clash that involved neither gold and spices nor colonialism and imperialism but, rather, such fundamental questions as where we come from and who we are: questions of identity that demanded new answers as biblical authority dramatically waned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history and across the globe, governments have taken a strong hand in censoring music. Whether in the interests of "safeguarding" the moral and religious values of their citizens or of promoting their own political goals, the character and severity of actions taken to suppress and control music that has been categorized as unacceptable, immoral, or as the Nazi's termed the music of Jewish and modernist composers, "degenerate," ranges from economic sanctions to forced immigration, imprisonment, and death. Yet in almost all cases composers found methods to counter this suppression and to let their voices be heard, even through the very music they were often forced to compose for the oppressing parties. In this first major collection of its kind, thirty contributors tackle centuries of music censorship across the globe from the medieval era to the modern day. Case studies address a number of instances both well- and lesser-known, including the tumultuous history of Wagner and Israel, rap music in the United States, silencing of women composers, and music in post-revolutionary Iran. Sections are organized by nature of censorship - religious, racial, and sexual - and type of government enforcement - democratic, totalitarian, and transitional. Focusing on individual composers and artists as well as eras within single countries, this Handbook champions the efficacy of music as an agent of collective power and resilience.

Book excerpt: The Entresol has been described as the most significant intellectual organisation in France in the first half of the eighteenth century. Its meetings in the 1720s were attented by some of the most important political thinkers in the country, among them Montesquieu, the marquis d'Argenson, the abbé de Saint-Pierre and the exiled lord Bolingbroke. The Entresol was a meeting of minds between older men who wished to keep in touch with current events, and younger men on their way up, who were eager to prove their suitability for high office in the French governing élite. Members came to meetings because they enjoyed talking about politics, especially foreign affais, and while the Entresol remained in favour, to be a member was a recommendation to those in government. In this book, the first to be published on the Entresol, Nick Childs examines the political thought and social background of the academy's members, and the reason why their meetings were eventually banned.

Book excerpt: Recorded between 1710 and 1777, the Bowyer ledgers offer a vast store of new information concerning authorship, book production, and distribution in eighteenth-century London. More than five-thousand works by one thousand authors were commissioned during that time. The ledgers record what happened as the text moved through the printing-house, noting such particulars as paper, types, format, corrections, and number printed. This edition of the Bowyer ledgers presents the records themselves in photofacsimile on microfiche, accompanied by a volume of editorial apparatus, which includes an essay on the nature and function of the ledgers, and a chronological checklist of works printed by the Bowyers, an index of authors and titles, and a topical index of equipment, materials, and processes.
