Book Synopsis The Political Thought of the Dutch Revolt 1555-1590 by : Martin van Gelderen
Download or read book The Political Thought of the Dutch Revolt 1555-1590 written by Martin van Gelderen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of the history of the political thought of the Dutch Revolt (1555-90). It explores the development of the political ideas which motivated and legitimized the Dutch resistance against the government of Philip II in the Low Countries, and which became the ideological foundations of the Dutch Republic as it emerged as one of the main powers of Europe. It shows how notions of liberty, constitutionalism, representation and popular sovereignty were of central importance to the political thought and revolutionary events of the Dutch Revolt, giving rise to a distinct political theory of resistance, to fundamental debates on the 'best state' of the new Dutch commonwealth and to passionate disputes on the relationship between church and state which prompted some of the most eloquent early modern pleas for religious toleration.

Book Synopsis Why Jesus Christ? by : Juniper B. Carol
Download or read book Why Jesus Christ? written by Juniper B. Carol and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1986 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular manuals of theology and scholarly theological tracts have long disseminated the message that the Scotistic perspective relative to the primacy and predestination of Christ and Mary is endorsed only by Franciscans "and a few others," whereas, in actuality, the Thomistic perspective is the only one based on Revelation and adopted by the vast majority of theologians. As a result of many years of investigation at home and abroad, Father Carol is now in possession of what may be regarded as the most complete collection of texts bearing on the subject, both pro and con, from ancient times to the present day. This book makes this massive documentation available for the first time. Originally published in 1987 by Trinity Communications.

Book Synopsis Saint Bonaventure by : Jacques Guy Bougerol
Download or read book Saint Bonaventure written by Jacques Guy Bougerol and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of Christian thought, St Bonaventure stands out as the pre-eminent Franciscan philosopher of the 13th century and as a key figure in the development of the spiritual theology of the Church. The four studies which constitute this volume present detailed investigations into some of the principal sources from which Bonaventure drew his inspiration, from Antiquity through to St Bernard in the century before his own. Proceeding from a careful analysis of the quotations he makes from these sources, the studies make clear the precise extent and nature of their importance in Bonaventure’s own thought, and the manner in which he selected ideas and used them to serve his own purposes. The first two pieces focus on the influence exerted by the Pseudo-Dionysius, in particular as concerns his notion of hierarchy; this became a central and fertile theme in the work of the Franciscan. Father Bougerol shows how Bonaventure interpreted and developed it, in the process transforming it into a meditation on the relationship between man and God. This emphasis also emerges in the third study, on his attitude towards Aristotle, which demonstrates Bonaventure’s deliberate progress towards the elaboration of his spiritual theology.

Download or read book Autour de l' enfant written by Anne Lefebvre-Teillard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present “revolution” in biological technology is leading lawyers to fundamentally reconsider the laws of human reproduction .What is at stake is not only the transmission of life but also the transmission of a certain order of the things on which society is based. This is the reason why the law has always sought to regulate the transmission of life. Covering themes from Canon and medieval Roman Law to the 1804 ‘Code civil’, the work includes twenty-three articles on the history of law about a number of modern-day questions. They deal with the close connections long maintained between marriage and procreation; with natural and legal "filiation" especially regarding the very delicate problems of evidence; with the institution of legitimation but also of the child as a person. There is also an article on the important matter of the "conceived child".
