Book excerpt: Pierre Grisvard, one of the most distinguished French mathematicians, died on April 22, 1994. A Conference was held in November 1994 out of which grew the invited articles contained in this volume. All of the papers are related to functional analysis applied to partial differential equations, which was Grisvard's specialty. Indeed his knowledge of this area was extremely broad. He began his career as one of the very first students of Jacques Louis Lions, and in 1965, he presented his "State Thesis" on interpolation spaces, using in particular, spectral theory for linear operators in Banach spaces. After 1970, he became a specialist in the study of optimal regularity for par tial differential equations with boundary conditions. He studied singulari ties coming from coefficients, boundary conditions, and mainly non-smooth domains, and left a legacy of precise results which have been published in journals and books. Pierre Grisvard spent most of his career as a full professor at the University of Nice, where he started in 1967. For shorter or longer periods, he visited several foreign countries, and collaborated with some of the most famous mathematicians in his field. He was also an excellent organizer and directed a large number of Ph.D. students. Finally, this volume contains a bibliography of Grisvard's works as well as one paper which he wrote and which has not been published before.

Les développements mathématiques y sont d'un accès facile. The meeting was held at Villard-de-Lans (near Grenoble, France) from 19th to 22 nd June 1979. The Colloquium considered mechanical aspects of the anisotropy of solids, both initial and induced by permanent deformation, anisotropic hardening and damage, oriented fissuration, etc. Topics concerned mathematical, experimental and engineering aspects of the anisotropy of metals, composites, soils and rocks. The aim of the Colloquium was to bring together experimentalists, theoretecians and engineers interested in various features of mechanical anisotropy, in order to permit an interdisciplinary exchange of understanding, experience and methods. A detailed description of the scope, aim and proposed topics is contained in the Preface. The announcement of the Colloquium attracted a large number of sub mitted contributions. Conforming with the principles of Euromech Colloquia and of the Colloques Internationaux du CNRS, the accepted contributions were limited to 50 communications. A general description of the scientific program is to be found in the Preface. Five general lectures gave state-of-the-art reports concerning some areas of the behavior of anisotropic solids; the 50 communications were divided into 12 sessions dealing with specific topics (see "Contents"). In order to facilitate subsequent contact between the reader and the contributors, full addresses are given in the "List of Authors."

Book excerpt: When, in my capacity as President of the Societe de Chimie physique, I opened the 24th Annual Meeting of this Society, devoted this year to 'molecular motions in liquids', I was stirred by a particular emotion. This had two reasons, one general and the other rather personal. I would like to give an explanation in the Foreword to this volume of communications to the Meeting and their ensuing discussions. An essential characteristic of science is its international nature. It is like a symphony composed of contributions by all the countries playing together as an orchestra in unison. Just as a melody has different 'colours' when played by strings or woodwinds, so there exist similar 'colour' differences, subtle ones, between scientific contributions from different countries, rooted as they are in their own cultural history and liable to impoverish the ensemble if they should cease to participate. I have always had an impression of marked 'colour' differences prevailing among American, Russian, Japanese and European contributions, although within the latter group the timbre is very much the same. This is why I have dreamed of a European 'chamber orchestra' in addition to the great world orchestra.
