Une "carte d’identité chimique et minéralogique" complète des sédiments fins de l’ensemble du continuum Seine-baie de Seine apporte de nouvelles informations sur : la dilution des apports fluviatiles en baie de Seine, la pénétration de particules fines marines dans l'estuaire et les petits cours d'eau côtiers, et l’apport local et ponctuel par érosion de matériel fossile. La résolution du mélange particulaire (ACP, équations de mélange) montre qu'à long terme (plusieurs décennies), la sédimentation fine actuelle correspond au mélange composite de quatre sources (marine, fluviatile, fossile, estuarienne). A court terme (saisonnier, évènementiel), le mélange est encore plus complexe, marqué par certaines sources secondaires.

Lors de ces crues, succédant à de faibles débits prolongés, sont combinés les apports d'un stock de sédiments fins intra-estuariens et les MES originaires du bassin versant amont. Des placages de vase se mettent alors en place dans les petits fonds ouverts sableux. Ces fonds correspondent actuellement à un contexte d'ensemble érosif, où sont mises à l'affleurement les argiles holocènes; une reconstitution lithochronostratigraphique de ces dépôts fossiles est proposée. Il est montré l'importance: à l'échelle décennale et pluri-annuelle, d'un envasement progressif des sables subtidaux et, à l'échelle de la saison, d'épisodes paroxysmiques de dépôts de vase, éphémères remaniés par les houles et les courants de marée.

Book excerpt: Geomorphological research in the humid to seasonal tropics has primarily concentrated on the most characteristic landform assemblage of this zone, namely that of stepped, largely undissected etchplains, often dotted with inselbergs and cutting across ancient basement rocks. Although the author discusses extensively this subject, he puts particular emphasis on the differences of chemical weathering and land-forming processes on rocks of various lithology and structure. This contrast becomes most evident, when comparing the highly resistant quartzitic sediments often covering the basement rocks with the easily weathered volcanics, e.g. the Deccan traps of India. The book was first published in German in 1987. However, the present version is much more than a translation, encompassing a range of new ideas and findings in the field of tropical geomorphology. The number of maps and illustrations has also been increased.
