Book excerpt: How the poor eat: an ambitious visual anthropology of diet and poverty in 36 case studies across the world To demonstrate what it means to live at the poverty line, Beijing-based artist duo Stefen Chow and Huiyi Lin visited 36 countries and territories on six continents--from Germany and China to New York and London--examining poverty with regard to food. From local markets, they bought vegetables, fruits, cereal products, proteins and snacks, basing the amount of food they could afford per day on the respective poverty-line definition set by each government. The duo photographed the resulting food, placed on a page of a local newspaper bought that day, calibrating lighting and shooting distance to ensure uniformity and comparability. In addition, the duo selected nine foods available in most of the economies observed to illustrate the globalization of production and the variations in prices and consumption. With this brilliantly conceived project, Chow and Lin render the problem of poverty visible and comprehensible to all.

Inventions are good, but if the point of escape into the unknown is the known, even better. Certainly nothing is more readily available than one?s own family. It is a matrix we will never leave, and if we escape it, we inevitably escape in relation to it. Diana worked with the image material her family generated on many formal and technical layers, visually formulating such larger questions as: who sees whom in which way, and smaller questions, such as: What is one doing when the camera is turned off? To what extent is a skin really our last boundary, and what happens when one dies? Diana exploits every possible representation of (her) family, and transforms it with a sharp eye into an art that is entirely its own. She uses the whole repertoire of the contemporary photo-filmic infrastructure, from the mobile phone to the memory stick of her father?s product palette from the last 10 years, to the dashcam of her truck-driving mother, to email, also in order to fulfill yet subvert every possible cliché about the East one could imagine. We should not forget the proper art historical knowledge sleeping behind her approach, which she luckily applies in a very liberating, un-academic and free manner. You wouldn?t need a reference with the simple function of affirming the position of her work, as it is with a lot of art these days. In the end, Diana uses something as personal as family to say something public, close to a narration on something as large as the European transformations that took place during the last 30 years. Book excerpt: -First complete overview of Latif al Ani's work Latif al Ani (born 1932, Baghdad) is known as the father of Iraqi photography. He was the first to capture cosmopolitan life in Iraq from the 1950s to the '70s. His black and white images represent a unique visual archive of the country during its 20th-century heyday. Al Ani photographed Iraq's vibrant culture in all its abundance and complexity; as well as documenting the country's westernised everyday life, political culture and industry, he also captured images of Iraq from the air for a British-owned oil company. Later, under Saddam Hussein's oppressive regime, Al Ani ceased photographing. For a long time, nothing was heard of the artist. Today, his images provide testimony of an era long gone. In 2015 Al Ani was presented with the Prince Claus Award, given annually by the Dutch Royal Family. In the same year he exhibited his work at the Venice Biennale in the Iraq Pavilion. This widely praised exhibition focused on works from the early period of his career and showed how Al Ani saw his country jump impatiently towards modernity while at the same time holding on to its traditions. The publication is introduced by an interview with Latif al Ani by Tamara Chalabi, the president of the Ruya Foundation in Iraq. It also contains an essay by Iranian Morad Montazami, curator of Middle Eastern Art at Tate Modern, London.
