Alors que les méthodes de récolte sont parfois empruntées aux cultures maraichères ou céréalières, le séchage est spécifique des plantes médicinales et aromatiques : il prend soin des principes contenus dans les plantes, ces plantes à infusion étant très souvent des plantes médicinales à forte consommation. Le conditionnement s'inspire non seulement de celui des plantes médicinales mais aussi du thé. A côté et aux dépends des formes traditionnelles des tisanes, les infusions aromatisées et les instantanés envahissent le marché. De nouvelles technologies apparaissent, affiliant ces derniers à la gamme nouvelle des déshydratés qui n'ont plus de points communs (au niveau de la législation et des contrôles) avec les plantes traditionnelles. La réglementation réserve une place particulière à ces plantes, produits-frontières entre médicaments et aliments et conserve des exigences strictes quant aux dispositions de ventes. Le contrôle qualité fortement inspiré, en théorie, des monographies des plantes médicinales, n'est en fait pas soumis à des obligations réglementaires. Ainsi lors de la normalisation, les espèces choisies tout comme le contrôle des contaminations (microbiologiques, résidus phytosanitaires) sont au bon vouloir du fabricant. L'absence de cadre juridique risque de conduire à des insuffisances graves en matière de propreté, de qualité. Il en est de même en ce qui concerne l'absence de réglementation dans le domaine des traitements bactéricides par irradiation (rayons gamma, X) qui tend à se développer alors qu'un vide juridique semble ignorer ces pratiques. Une étude approfondie des plantes à infusion par le législateur semble urgente, le vide juridique étant de plus en plus flagrant.

This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.
