Book Synopsis Bruno's Challenge by : Martin Walker
Download or read book Bruno's Challenge written by Martin Walker and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Walker presents his first collection of stories featuring all the familiar characters from his Bruno novels and the glories of the Périgord region of France, with ample helpings of food and wine. "Whether preparing nettle soup, liaising with the Police Nationale or reading boar scat, Bruno remains focused and efficient.... Turn immediately to Martin Walker’s new platter of delicious morsels.”—The Washington Post After a prisoner breaks parole to see his son on Christmas, Bruno must track him down before he throws away his chance at eventual freedom. When a Senegalese man’s coffee sells superbly at the market, some café owners become incensed by the new competition and take matters into their own hands. As a Swiss tourist and a St. Denis native fall in love over the fruit-and-veggie stall, one of their family members takes drastic steps to break them up. A fledgling tour bus business is sabotaged, leading Bruno to take a closer look at a town love triangle. Called in to investigate a case of stolen oysters, our beloved policeman reunites with an old flame to catch the shellfish thieves. In story after story, Bruno settles town disputes, mediates family quarrels, and tracks down lawbreakers in his adored village of St. Denis and its environs. Featured meals in the collection include a fatty Christmas goose, a savory nettle soup with crème fraîche, and a fluffy quiche Lorraine.

Book Synopsis Uneasy Genius: The Life And Work Of Pierre Duhem by : St.L. Jaki
Download or read book Uneasy Genius: The Life And Work Of Pierre Duhem written by St.L. Jaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hundred years have now gone by since in the midsummer of 1882 Pierre Duhem, a graduate of College Stanislas, completed with brilliant success his entrance exams to the Ecole Normale Superieure and embarked on his career as a theoretical physicist. His father, a textile salesman, hoped that Hierre would pursue a career in business, one of the few professional fields where perhaps he would not have succeeded. Not that young Duhem lacked sense for the practical. He could have easily made a name for himself as an artist had he developed professionally his skill to draw portraits and landscapes. His ability to make a point and his readiness to join in a debate, could have earned him fame as a lawyer. A potential actor was in sight when he entertained friends with mimicry. That as a student of physics he entered and stayed first in his class at the Ecole Normale, did not thwart his talents for the life sciences. No less a biologist than Pasteur tried to obtain Duhem for assistant. His command of Greek and Latin would have secured him a career as a classicist. He was a Frenchman, not to be met too often, whose rightful ad miration for and mastery of his native tongue, did not prove a barrier to the major modern languages. As one who taught himself the complex art of medieval paleo graphy, he could easily have mastered the many auxiliary sciences needed by a consummate historian.

Book Synopsis Hortense Allart by : Helynne Hollstein Hansen
Download or read book Hortense Allart written by Helynne Hollstein Hansen and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1998 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hortense Allart provides a biography of the French feminist and Romantic writer from the nineteenth century. Allart was a close friend and correspondent of several well-known writers of her time, including Chateaubriand, Sainte-Beuve, Béranger, George Sand, and Marie d'Agoult, and was a first cousin of the poet Sophie Gay de Girardin. In addition to her novels, political and religious essays, and historical writings, her most famous essay Le Femme et la Democratie de Nos Temps makes her stand out in her own time, and serves as a significant precursor to the twentieth century feminist literary movement. The author intermingles biographical information with analyses of her ten novels and her chief essay, and analyzes in modern feminist critical terms how Allart prefigured the reach for a gynocentric language that is the focus of contemporary women's writing, using the original French to quote Allart's works.
