Download or read book Changing Parks written by John S. Marsh and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book is a must for everyone concerned with the heritage and future of Canada's parks. Contributors include an impressive assembly of noted park experts ranging from academic authorities and government parks personnel to concerned nonpolitical park supporters. Since the establishment of Banff National Park in 1885 and Algonquin Provincial Park in 1893, parklands have been part of Canada's heritage. Where other protected areas, such as forest reserves, heritage rivers and greenways, have also been created, a more comprehensive view of the creation and management of conservation areas and marshland is discussed. Cooperative approaches to park management recognize the regional context of parks with respect to local communities, as well as the inclusion of more diverse groups of people, particularly Aboriginals. This work encourages the general public to take an interest in our priceless park heritage.

Book Synopsis Protection and Management of Species, Habitats, Ecosystems and Landscapes by : Panayotis Dimopoulos
Download or read book Protection and Management of Species, Habitats, Ecosystems and Landscapes written by Panayotis Dimopoulos and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human well-being and the prerequisite sustainable environmental management are currently at stake, reaching a bottleneck when trying to cope with (i) the ever-growing world population, (ii) the constantly increasing need for natural resources (and the subsequent overexploitation of species, habitats, ecosystems, and landscapes) and (iii) the documented and on-going impacts of climate change. By this, the role of conservation and management practices for the environment is characterized as a crucial and top issue and should deal with (a) promoting best practices from the local to the global level, (b) identifying spatial and temporal knowledge gaps, (c) multidisciplinary aspects for sustainable management practices, (d) identifying and interpreting the role of stakeholders and socio-economic parameters in the decision-making process, and (e) methods and practices to integrate the concept of ecosystem services into natural capital assessment and accounting, conservation and management strategies. Modern literature highlights that land use change and prioritization, the restoration of natural areas and cultural landscape identification and maintenance, should be considered at the top of the scientific and policy agenda, as well as at the epicenter of novel awareness-raising strategies for the environment in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of research papers, presented at meetings organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT), concerns a variety of issues relating to the area of sustainable development. WIT has a long and very successful record of organising conferences on the topic of sustainability, which requires an interdisciplinary approach. Any sustainable solutions that are derived solely from the perspective of a single discipline may have unintended damaging consequences that create new problems. Thus effective sustainable solutions require the collaboration of scientists and engineers from various disciplines, as well as planners, architects, environmentalists, policy makers, social scientists, and economists. The contents of this book reflect that interdisciplinary approach, and include topics under the main areas of: Sustainable development and planning; Disaster management; Air pollution; Urban transport; Ecosystems and Water resources management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two day workshop on Research and Monitoring in the Greater Kouchibouguac Ecosystem was held in Richibucto on November 1995. Participants from several federal and provincial departments, as well as conservation groups and universities gathered together during these two days of exchange on the research and monitoring work they were doing, not only in KNP, but also in the surrounding areas. This final product of the workshop constitutes a compendium of short papers from several speakers presentations (not all speakers submitted a paper). The reader will find a wide range of papers on different topics from sand dune dynamics to paleobotanical work in bogs to fisheries impacts on a tern colony to clam population assessment. This variety of papers reflects the holistic approach that Kouchibouguac National Park's conservation staff are taking towards ecosystem management.
